Weatherby vanguards: why the three holes?

Dear Guys,


    The Howa 1500 looks like a nice rifle, but it doesn't really come with a first rate walnut stock.


    The Weatherby Vanguards come with beautiful walnut, and a Howa 1500 action, but for some reason, there are three holes drilled in the side of the bolt.  Personally, I think they look terrible.  They stare out at you agape, and remind me of somebody who made swiss cheese out of a receiver by drilling three holes in it for a side mount.


   So, what's the point of these three holes?  Why does Weatherby "add" them to the Howa 1500's regular bolt?

I've not seen them, but are they vent holes?  Most rifles have vents to let gas escape in case of split case of blow by.

Don't know about the holes but I bought Howa barreled actions and put Boyd's stocks on 'em.

       I think mechanic is right. They are vent holes.

ALL Weatherby bolt actions have 3 gas vent holes in the side of the bolt.  Same as all Fords have blue ovals and all Chevys have bow ties.
