What is made today to match the Ithaca Ultrafeatherlights?
« on: March 23, 2013, 08:25:53 AM »
Went on a bought bird hunt and took my 20 gauge Ithaca.  Shot a lot of ducks with this gun and it fits me like no other.  Any way, the guide offered me a fair price for it.  I thanked him for the compliment, but I like it too much.  What is equivalent to it?  Are these the last of the breed?  I know a lot of O/U are out there, but I cut my teeth on the pumps and a single trigger.

He suggested I play with his Yildez 410 O/U.  Nice and light, but what about them?  What is the equivalent pump?

thank you - Zcarp2

Don't they still offer them? I seem to recall seeing them on the company website. To be honest I can't say as I know exactly what an old one would feature.

I have seriously considered a nicely done new Ithaca. The ones from the custom shop look pretty nice in the pictures. Alas my finances have been raided by an errant timing chain tensioner, re., new car purchase.

Alright my curiosity sent me to the website. They have a Featherlight, no ultra if that is the difference you refer to. 28ga to 12ga and everything in between.

My Uncle always doted on his Ithaca. It was a beautiful gun and every time I see one I think of him. I like them for that reason as much as any.

If memory serves me correct (and it may not) Ithaca did make an aluminum receiver model they called the Ultralight for only 2 or 3 years in the 1980's, just before they went bankrupt.

They are back in business and making model 37's again, but I'm pretty sure they are all steel framed, as were all the Featherlight models.  There really wasn't much difference in weight between the Ultralight and the Featherlight.  The model 37 has always been one of the lightest weight pumps made.
The only other bottom eject pump currently made (I'm not counting the cheap import from Savage) is the browning BPS, but it's quite a bit heavier than the Ithaca.

Gentlemen,
thank you for your answers.  Yes, the ultrafeatherlight has an aluminum reciever and is much lighter than any other pump or semi-automatic that I have held.  It really is a light field gun.  Just from handling the 410 O/U, my 20 pump was the same weight.

Now, I got to save my pennies for a new Ithaca 20 Gauge Featherweight.

I tried their 12 gauge, but it felt funny compared to the 12 Gauge Browning Pump that I use too.  No, I'm not left handed, I just got used to the bottom ejectors.  The 20 gauge Browning did not feel as good so I didn't buy it.  May need to compare weights.

Thank you for the information.

Nice. I have had a model 37 for many years. It is my favorite pump gun.
I just spent some time googling about the Ultra .....wish that I could try one out the 12 gauge is under six pounds and the 20 is down at five.
You could carry that around the Upland very easily.
I have two shotguns that come close: a Franchi AL48 and a Winchester model 59 Winlite..both 12s and both semi-autos amd both under six pounds. Neither is made in the same form any longer...and neither gets down the the weight of the Ithaca 20 Ultra.
