Pre-64 Win M70 Rifle Question
« on: February 21, 2004, 09:45:50 AM »
:?: I was browsing around one of my local gunshops (like I'm not broke enough) and found a 1958 manufactured Winchester M70 Standard grade rifle in .30-06. The rifle looks like it's been sitting in a closet for 46 years! The bluing is perfect and the stock is about 99% (one very small scratch) and has the steel butt plate. Its got the Lyman 57 peep sight, a fold down rear sight, a square white bead front sight and a 24" barrel. The bolt is jeweled and smooth as silk to work! They're asking 595.00 for it and my older Gun Traders Guide lists it for 825.00 Is that a good price? Should I grab it? Lord knows I don't need another 06 but it felt wonderful in my hands and as light as my Ruger M77 Ultra Light! Should I buy it and rebore it to .338 WM? Guys, I need your help and advice here!  Thanks CEJ... P.S. They also had a new in box M700 in 8MM Rem Mag.. :bye:
If I can't take my rifles with me, I don't want to go!

CEJ1895,

WARRING - Do not buy that Winchester Pre 64 M70 .30-06.  Let me know where it's at so it can be disposed of properly.

All kidding aside you trying to tell us it isn't in your safe as we speak.  As far as re-boring it that I wouldn't do.  That original barrel is worth a lot more as is.  Rebarrel if you must but I wouldn't rebarrel to a cartridge that required having the bolt face opened up(like you will for a belted cartridge).  As for the 8mm Remington Magnum that is a dead cartridge.  Ammo for it is hard to get now and is only going to get harder to find.  If you reload then it isn't so bad.  Lawdog

cej :  But it if you havent already done so, last week I got a 1948 model of the same gun but it originally was a 22 hornet and someone had it rechambered into 222, but I didnt get it so much as to what it could be worth I got it because I just liked it and you dont see too many of them anymore, I would be willing to bet there is a large number of people who havent seen one let alone handled one, they are wonderful. :D    JIM

Guys - You guys are definately a bad influence on my bank account (what's left of it!)  :)   I'm going to head down there next week and see what he'll take (besides an arm and a leg) for a trade on it! If I can work a deal on it, I'll leave it as is since it would be wrong to alter it! Thanks for the advice!  CEJ...
