Looks sorta like it, but can't really tell, maybe someone with more keen Huntsman eyes can tell ya for sure, I haven't even shot mine yet!

This has a very fine hole in the breech. Not sure if the shotgun primer just fits inside and blast is directed into hole. Not sure the amount of use this gun had but it has not been cleaned much.

I think you need to remove the plug and maybe see what it is. Almost looks like it is maybe a .25cal conversion. Can you get the plug out ? It should turn to the left when removing. Kurt

I have a sidekick rather than a huntsman, but...It doesn't look like the 25 cal conversion or any aftermarket plug. They had a hex nut shape for removal with a socket wrench. The slots for removal looks like the stock plug to be used with a plastic primer carrier.

Yep that's the standard plug that uses the carriers. You're going to need to get the plug tool to get it out. See the FAQ. It looks very dirty to me, if it doesn't come out fairly easily you may need to let it sit with cleaning solvent on it for a day or two. I loosen mine every other shot so I can easily get it out. I learned this the hard way.

Maybe just the picture, but it looks like the chamber is cracked. Is there a slot cut in the chamber rim?

I think the chamber rim has a slot for a small tab on the primer carrier that sticks outside the barrel.

That is one of the OEM Breech plugs. Either the 7/8" or the 5/8", depending on the year of the Huntsman. You cannot tell which one by looking at that end, until you remove it at least part way. 2002-2004 used the 7/8", 2005-2008 use the 5/8". They both use the orange primer carriers for 209 primers.

Your rifle is a 2003, and will have the 7/8" breech plug.

Ok, I have no breech tool to get breech out. Can't find one. I would like to get a 7/8 breech that will fir the hundreds of musket caps I have. This possible Buster?

The only way I know of is if you can get a Hubbard Breech plug and screw in a musket nipple. However, I doubt it would work very well with the standard firing pin.

The #11 only works for a limited number of shots, before some serious cleaning is required in and around the firing pin opening in the standing breech. In other words, will work for a couple shots while hunting, but for an extended range session over 5 or 6 shots, not so much.

The older 70's Huntsmans have a large diameter flat firing pin for striking caps. This helps prevent some of the blowback gases and carbon from sticking the pin like in the newer Huntsmans that use a shotgun firing pin for 209 primers.

Personally, I wouldn't waste my time with a #11 or musket nipple, unless it may be a requirement of your States hunting regulations. Get a carrierless 209 primer plug, and if you ever want to shoot Blackhorn 209 you'll be all set.

I made my own 7/8" musket nipple breech plug, pops RWS flangeless caps just fine, haven't shot it yet tho, so I'll be mindful of the ignition problems when working loads, thx Busta.

If anyone is using a #11 or musket nipple for ignition in the newer Huntsman/Sidekick, just make sure you keep an eye on your standard firing pin. There is the possibility that blowback carbon could stick it in the out position, and there is no ejector/extractor that would give you a heads up, or break it off. If this were to happen, there is the possibility that when you install a new cap on the nipple then close the action, the stuck firing pin COULD POSSIBLY set off the nipple and your charge. Be extra careful, especially when closing a primed and loaded rifle.

Just make sure to check your firing pin after each and every shot for function, to make sure it returns into the receiver, and is not protruding past the standing breech. As mentioned earlier, at some point carbon will stick the firing pin. If shooting at the range, some BP cleaner/windex/alcohol/break free or similar on a Q-Tip can help keep things operating longer.

What I do is after each shot with the action open (fired/unloaded rifle), cock the hammer and pull trigger while controlling the hammer fall, pushing it forward so the firing pin extends past the standing breech. Holding this position, use a Q-Tip with one of the above cleaners, and clean the firing pin and standing breech, maintaining trigger pull to keep transfer bar engaged, working hammer/firing pin back and forth.

Remember that Black Powder and most BP Substitued are also very corrosive, so a thourough cleaning inside and out may be required after shooting.

Just wanted to get that out there, and as always, Safety First.

I shoot the heck out of my 50 cal huntsman, and i hadn't took the plug out of it for a few (years) yes years I dont take the breech plugs out of the TC renegade to clean the barrel and I dont see any reason to if I do good job of cleaning from muzzle on a huntsman i do clean the end of the plug where the carrier fits that is bout all , then i thought i wanted a spare plug so i just took it out couple days ago to see which size the plug was not a real problem soaked it in water for couple hours and used this little tool it came right out

No question the aftermarket carrierless 209 plug is 100% reliable, and very simple to use.

My favorite plugs are my customs with the removable vent liners, also 100% reliable in my experience. These have a flame channel that goes from the primer pocket down to the vent liner. Carbon builds up in there and needs to be cleaned out by removing the vent liner and simply turning a 5/32" drill bit by hand through the plug when cleaning after a range session.
