poor mans drilling.......eaa baikal izh 94
« on: November 30, 2012, 07:17:08 AM »

i always wanted a drilling........you sure pay a lot for that extra barrel
so as soon as i get my money straightened  out....does that ever happen
i am  thinking  a combo gun.....at the rate my drilling search is going  i will die first
any one with any experience with them?
i have a baikal  SXS 12ga.....kinda rough finish  but it is a very nice gun....fits me perfect
my choice will be  12ga/308........other caliber only  if the price is exceptional
i like cast  and already have 308s.....or 30-06  would be a good choice
i also shoot cast

how do they regulate?
i think  i prefer a ''cape'' gun to a double rifle......besides the price
how  important is it the  the shot gun be regulated compared to 2 rifle barrels
as a boy  i grew up with a double 12ga SXS...slug in one  buck in the other
i will probly  if i get  this gun it  will get a red-dot

45-70, like you, I often hunted with a SxS shotgun in my youth. Mine was a Winchester model 24 in 16ga. The slug in whichever barrel would root it to point of aim & buckshot or birdshot in the other barrel worked for me also.
While not really a cape gun I guess it functioned as one for short range use.  ;D A double shotgun is really a pretty practice hunting gun for a lot of Florida. Since I've been back I find myself carrying my old 97 pump gun a lot. Since my eyes are failing I find myself reverting back to the shotguns that I used to hunt with as a young man.  :o with the loss of strength in my hands though it is easier to operate a double than the old pump.

most are around $550   i have found so far....in 308

45-70,
I've got a Remington Spartan IZH-94 and it's a 308/12. This gun shoots alot better than I expected it to and I've killed a few deer with it using both the rifle and the shotgun with 3" 00 buck. I've got a Leupold 1.5-5 mounted on mine and it has worked very well.. It's not the prettiest gun in the safe but it's hard to beat for the money.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Sorry guys, I don't love my "New Russian Friends" enough to buy a Baikal.  I bought an older Savage 24 instead.  I didn't "create" a new job....but it didn't send one overseas either.

I dont think the Baikal is a poor mans drilling. Having owned one I think it is a great no frills combo gun that with the screw in choke is very versatile.  I have taken deer, hogs turkey, racoon, and coyote with mine.

The one on GB is still available and the price has dropped.  I go back and forth on the 308 vs 30-06 and I dont think you can go wrong either way.

My Baikal was regulated perfectly from the factory.  The shotgun was shooting a slug at 70 yards with the rifle zeroed at 100 yards.  I dont know what happened when Remington stepped in but my Spartan was regulated terribly.

Please remember you cant adjust windage on the Spartan, there is a way to regulate elevation.
