Picked up a like-new but probably 20-year-old Ruger M77 in .257 Roberts last weekend.  This will be my second varmint gun, using 75g bullets, and will see use on mule deer and antelope as well with 115-120g bullets.
Most if not all of my loads will be developed using +P data.

I'd like to hear aout the game you've taken with a .257 Roberts +P and how it has performed for you.

Several months ago I got one of the light weight, 20 inch barrel, Rugers and couldn't to get it to shoot squat.  Sometimes my spread would be six inches with factory ammo.  I sent it back to Ruger and they say they corrected it by doing something to the stock and re-doing the crown.  It's been to cold to go to the range, but I've loaded up about nine different loads and will try it out soon.  I really like the rifle and sure hopes it does well.  There is one thing I don't like and that is a compact scope won't fit.  The Leupold 3X9 makes it look a little top heavy.  In june 2004 Swift is going to have a 257 Sirrocco (bad spelling) bullet which should be just right for deer.

razmuz -

Thanks for the tip about Scirocco bullets - I definitely want to try them!  Just emailed Swift to verify and to ask what the weight will be and for load data.  Will have to give A-Frames a try, too.

In the meantime I will be using Hornady 75g V-MAX bullets for varmint work (will load the first work-up loads this weekend, trying for Hornady's 3500fps), and I picked up a box of Barnes Triple-Shock 115g's to play with for bigger work.  (Even though I wasn't impressed with 7mm 160g XLC's on antelope, they worked great on the one coyote I shot - never saw one drop so fast, and never found a hole - entrance or exit!)

Just got off the phone with Barnes and they say the TSX (Triple Shock X) bullets will run the same speed as the XLC's, so the 115g should hit +/-2975fps.

I had one of the Ruger 77 RL in 250-3000.  I had the sampe problem as you seem to be having.  I had to apply very heavy pressure to the forend to get it to shoot well.  I used a stiff plastic shim just behind the black forend tip to apply upward pressure on the barrel .  With the shim I got down to less than 1 inch groups.  If it doesn't shoot this time try differend shims under the forend, might help.
