Question about H&R 243
« on: January 08, 2013, 07:39:06 PM »
Hey everyone! Newb here! I just bought a H&R break action 243 today. It was an impulse buy and usually I research the heck out of a product/item before I buy.

I've been reading numerous forums and reviews on it tonight and the impression I get is its not a very good firearm. I plan to use it to pick off some varmints and as a secondary deer rifle (my 30-06 is my main deer rifle).

My question is 1. Is it a decent gun? and 2. Will it be suitable for varmints/deer?

Thanks

Read thru the forum here on the H&R's. It is very extensive. Many of those people that put Handi's down don't give them a chance. They think a gun has too cost a lot of money to be any good. Follow the instructions given here about cleaning and breakin of your new Handi. Take it to the range, shoot and enjoy. If you run into any problems read the sticky's on this forum or Post a Question on this forum.  This is a great bunch of people here that will answer all your questions . Who knows, you may become what they call here a Handi Holic. Many of the members here own many many many Handi's. I bought my first Handi about 3 yrs ago. I now own 12. I just bought a BC 45 Carbine yesterday. Injoy your new gun.

Thx for the info! I figured that was the case. I got the same stuff when I bought a Ruger P series, everyone dogged on me because they said Glock was the way to go. I love my Ruger and trust it with my life.

Start by reading the Handi Basics 101 section. Then the FAQ & Help section. Give yourself time to think about all this info and you should start to see just how much injoyment these guns will be. As I said before, If you have any questions just ask. You will find lots of help here.

I love my .243's... they are accurate with the right loads... 58 VM Moly's really spank coyotes... .243's are adequate for deer also... for deer I like the 85 grain Interbond... 100 grain bullets don't shoot as well as I'd like, but the 85 HI and the 90 NBT are really good, so all is well.

I too use the 85 gr. bullets.  2.5 inch groups at 300 yards.  Don't let anyone tell you a Handi won't shoot.  Another newcomer to the forum just posted that his .243 is scary accurate at 1000 yards.....I can't even see that far :'(    Here's the link:

I just picked up my new 243 Ultra thumbhole last week. I shot my first group after 9 rounds working the scope in and cleaning. They were within a inch at 40 yds, standing with a treelimb rest, with cheap 70gr PSPs.

I think you'll be very happy once you figure out what the gun likes, and read through the info here. Good Luck!

WELCOME EDChris and terryrudd!!!!

I also have a couple 243's and I like them and they shoot well!  I also have a couple friends and family with them, they all shoot well enough to bring home the venison and bacon and plant a couple coyotes every season!!

Some complain of poor accuracy with the 100g bullets. So try a couple different makers and weights.  IMHO, the 90 and 100's are the big game bullets. Some like the 85g Sierra HP BT and it is a good bullet if your gonna shoot long distances with a med bore 243/6mm.

Good luck with yours!

Welcome,, Dont  count out that  243 Handi at all,  As stated  earlier on,,I compete at 1000 yards with mine,, It actually  out performs  some of my big money target rifles .  Anyone who says a handi isnt accurate  hasnt spent the time shooting one,, They are scary accurrate with minimal  input costs.  spends some time working up the loads,  58 grain vmax for dogs   75gr hp hornadys  target loads and 100 gr partitions for deer  work  very well as well on moose and elk.  have fun enjoy shooting it.
