RE-CHAMBER TO .22 MAGNUM?
« on: September 29, 2012, 11:21:25 AM »
I've got an Iver-Johnson Target Sealed 8 revolver an uncle gave me when I was in the seventh grade (50 years ago). When I first got it, I think it might have been capable of 3-inch groups at 50 feet, but it became less accurate from wear as the cylinder is not always aligned well with the barrel. I don't want to get rid of it because it was a gift, but I think it would be expensive to rebuild. Also, the barrel is pitted and would need replacing. However, if it were re-chambered to .22 Magnum it might be a half way decent close range self defense gun, even with a pitted barrel. I've read that a .22 Magnum pistol is far better than one in .22 Long Rifle. The cylinder is long enough. Isn't the chamber pressure of a .22 Magnum about the same as for a high-speed .22 Long Rifle?

I do not believe those guns are worth fixing, let alone customizing, keep it for the memories. Be safe Mtn Jack

Agree.  Unless sentimental reasons dictate cost, you'll spend far more than its worth on it.   I'd also be concerned about rechambering to 22MAG without a competent smith checking it out thoroughly before you even consider it.   I had a bunch of old IJ revolvers in the 50's, 60's and 70's... RF, 32 S&W and 38 S&W mostly.   Most of them were not considered to be strong handguns at all, especially the top breaks but also most others.   Food for thought anyway.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

The IJ's were not strong guns. If it is still 'can accurate' shoot it once in a while and have some fun. I would use no more than standard velo. .22LR ammo, and might even keep to using only CB's, they are big fun and low pressure and may shoot to the sights fairly close.
You are right that the 22Mag is a 'better' defensive load that .22LR; but unless you have other reasons to only have a 22M as your 'big gun' I would recommend at least a 38Spl. for that.
