Buffalo Classic wood replacement
« on: December 18, 2012, 10:14:15 PM »
I would love to have a Classic 45 Colt Carbine. Only problem is I'm in Canada and they aren't available here.  I understand that all the wood is interchangeable between SB2 rifles and was thinking about getting a HandiRifle in 30-30 or 45-70 and putting the wood from a Buffalo Classic Rifle on it. I think it would be a fair compromise. Where could I get replacement wood for the Buffalo Classic Rifle ?

Hi,

Watch the GBO H&R Classifieds as both styles of the BC stock sets are for sale from time to time.  Note there are two variations of the BC stock set.  The Carbine has a shorter forestock than the 32" 45-70 BC or the 28" 38-55 TM models.  To the best of my knowledge, the rear stocks are the same on all three of these guns.  I had a BC (long forestock) set on a 22" 45-70 and shooting just trapdoor level loads the buttplate tends to tenderize your shoulder in short order.
Good luck with your project.

I sold three sets in the past few months.  I need a scope, and they just didn't work for me.  Besides, I never could make friends with those metal butt plates.  They just didn't like me for some reason ::)

I like carbines!   ;D  Right now I've got carbine wood on:

45 Colt (naturally...  ::) )
357 Max;
45/70; and
444 Marlin.

For some reason I think there's more...  :-\  Maybe I'm thinking of the 500 S&W...  ???  Oh well, you get the idea!   ;)

Anyway, I bought the carbine wood for the latter three rifles right here on our classifieds.

Hey Black Lab, ain't it rough havin' good taste  ;)
I done just that with my 22 Mag Ultra Varmint platform with a 22LR Sportster swap barrel setup. Its been that way for quite a while now, just seems natural, but Ive had the 'classic' wood on about everything but shotgun at one time or other. It works OK on scoped light kickers, but as Pete said, for serious calibers the cresent buttplate and low comb dont fit a lot of people.

I have the BC carbine wood on a 30-30 and a 357 maxi.  I like them and the Handi grip with low scopes and bobbed hammers.  Light recoil calibers, so no problem for me.  The shorter forend looks better on 22" barrels to me.

Thanks for all the leads.  ;D  Any chance you could post a photo of the BC 30-30 Carbine ?

The short BC -Carbine forearm is the same length as the standard palletwod one, including the schnable, the long walnut one on the BC and TM will make (IMHO) a 22" barrel rifle look out of proportion, though with a stubbie can appear almost Mannlicher looking.
For the buttstock, a judicious use of rasp and sandpaper can make a std. one with low comb and pistolgrip into a pretty decent straight wrist. Use your favorite wood stain and finish and it will look nice without the expense of the classic wood (at least for now). A plain flat buttplate wont be a cresent, and for some your shoulder will thank you. A lot of vintage rifles had the 'shotgun buttplate' s an option anyway, and for good reason.
'Palletwood' is available new or here on the classifieds much more often and for the price you can afford to mess around with reshaping and not feel too deep in.

I also reside in Canuckistan... And it can certainly be a drag getting the firearms or parts that suit "our fancy." I have purchased stocks from Numrich... So I would start there... I also have a number of sets from Boyd's, but these are sterling thumbhole sets... I have also dealt with Gunstocks Inc. Very expensive to Canada... And I was not impressed with the inletting or semi-finish... It was rough, with a lot of deep chatter marks... It took a lot of "elbow grease" to get it into shape. The classifieds are your best bet... I have seen them on the EE on CGN also, so look there too.

Here is the Numrich link;

Ooopppssss... I didn't read the above posts close enough... the Numrich links were already posted... oh well I guess repetition won't hurt.

Working the wood sounds like it might do the trick in the short term. Certainly couldn't hurt the looks of the stock piece.  ;)  I emailed Western Gun Parts about any stocks they may have. Now I have to sort out what caliber. 30-30 45-70 or 500 S+W The 500 S+W seem to be the easest one to get in Canada for some reason.  :o All sorts of them. I think I'm starting to lean between the 30-30 and 45-70  :-\

Can't go wrong with either one.  Both are excellent shooters.  I guess it would depend what your going to use it for, and on the cost of ammo in Canada.  I know that 30-30 ammo is a lot cheaper than 45-70 here in the states.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Hey partner... IMO go with the .30/30 (first... eventually you'll want both, especially if you reload)... Cabela's Canada has a bunch in stock (link below)... I bought one a few months ago on a special promotion for $239 with free shipping, but that deal is over... it is back to $279. I did mine up a little differently than you are planning (see below), but at present I am working on a walnut Mannlicher for a Handi shorty 7mm-08.
