Feinstein leads Democratic senators in call to renew gun debate, vows legislation  Published December 16, 2012
FoxNews.com
  •
Democratic senators flung open the door Sunday for a renewed debate on national gun laws, vowing in the aftermath of the deadly Connecticut school shootings to immediately introduce gun-ban legislation and take the issue to the chamber floor.
California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said she will introduce a bill on the first day Congress returns in January to ban the sale of so-called “assault weapons” and high-capacity ammunition clips.

“I’m going to introduce it in the Senate, and the same bill will be introduced in the House,” Feinstein said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Feinstein, a major supporter of a 10-year ban on assault weapons that expired in 2004, said her renewed effort is to get “weapons of war off the streets.”
She was joined Sunday by Sens. Dick Durbin, Illinois, and Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut, who vowed to bring the issue to Capitol Hill in the coming weeks.
Their promises follow the incident Friday in which a gunman purportedly used semi-automatic weapons inside the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., to kill 26 people – including 20 first-graders.
Durbin, the Senate Majority Whip, said he will hold a hearing in the next few weeks on the issue.
“We need to sit down and have a quiet and calm conversation on the Second Amendment,” he told “Fox News Sunday.”

The senator said the debate has so far been dominated by national gun lobbies “that have agendas.” But he thinks the mass shooting could finally result in more strict laws.
“I think what happened might at least lead some to sit down” and talk, he said.
Blumenthal said he would not discuss specifics while the nation still grieves but said he intends to talk about gun control on the Senate floor as early as this week.
“We need to do something,” he said on ABC’s “This Week.”
Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert agreed that all parties must come together and have an “open-minded” conversation.
However, he maintained his position that gun ownership is a constitutional right that protects Americans.
“I wish to God (the school principal) had a gun locked up her office” so she could have taken off the shooter’s head, Gohmert said on Fox.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg suggested that gun control should be the top item on President Obama’s second-term agenda and called on him to lead the debate.
“The president has to lead, tell this country what to do,” the Democratic mayor told NBC.
Bloomberg -- whose group Mayors Against Illegal Guns is becoming increasingly vocal about the issue -- also dismissed the notion that the National Rifle Association remains powerful enough to defeat tighter regulations.

“The NRA’s No. 1 objective was to defeat Barack Obama, and he won comfortable,” he said. “And it’s a myth that the NRA is so powerful that Democrats (who voted for the 2004 ban) lost re-election.”
Durbin also called for a national commission on mass violence, an idea that Connecticut Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman suggested earlier on the Fox show. Durbin called for the commission to also address the issue of school violence.

i can't think of a single thing PRODUCTIVE, or beneficial, that any of them have done except attack guns and call for higher taxes.

Well, Feinstein is a natural choice. Let her lead... I've got something for her & her arguments.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

If crazies want to kill, they will do it one way or another. If high capacity guns are unavailable or hard to get, they will turn to bombs and instead of killing scores of people, they will kill hundreds or thousands. Remember Timmy? He killed toddlers right along with the adults, defiant to the end and not one bit sorry. Are we going to ban fertilizer and diesel fuel? What we need is to put the crazies away where they can do no harm banning guns is not the answer.

30 shot clips..10 shot clips..or 5 shots what does it matter a person can change clips in seconds and continue the mayhem against 6 and 7 year olds most likely frozen in fear. even a bolt with 5 shot mags can be replinshed in seconds. banning them is not going to solve the problem of crazy people determined to commit mass murder.
i think she really believes that will stop this from ever happening her depth of firearms knowledge is exposed when she states the military style (look alike) must be banned. christ some still are muttering crap about full auto assault weapons.  a black fibeglass stock and tricked out laser sites on nothing more than a semi auto rifle. they are worried more about what the guns look like than anything else. of course i am starting to hear some state all semi autos should be banned and all in circulation confiscated. they are starting to say only single shot rifles and shotguns and only 6 shot revolvers should be allowed.
prepare the battle will be fought in this last term of ob they want all guns and they mean it...

Another "voice of reason" a lady commentator on Fox the other night asked "Common sense should prevail here, I mean, why does anyone "need" a 30 shot clip? I have a friend who just came from deer hunting and he says he never puts more than three "clips" ( she meant rounds) in his rifle. Why do you need thirty rounds to kill a deer?"
It's not about "need" lady! It's about the fact that a law abiding, free citizen might 'want" one, or 100!
Lots of 'feelings" being aired on all the networks, and don't forget, we have Piers Morgan telling everyone how "Australia" did it, why can't the US? "We ain't Australia Piers!" And nope, I'm not a Chaplain in any Militia or White Supremacist, don't even own an AR at present ( but I've owned plenty through the years, enjoyed them all) I get torqued up by anyone who wants to tell another Citizen "what they need" or don't need. One doesn't "need" a lot of things, but jiminy crickets, isn't it nice to have a "choice" and an opportunity to obtain the legitimate things we just "want"?
I've always had  CCW plain clothed "security", discreet in appearance and manners, in all our services. I think of them as just another Sheep Dog , and Woe! to the Wolf who tries to hurt our "flock"! Since everyone agrees that we live in dangerous (perilous) times, having armed (discreet) security at schools  would seem more justified than armed security at Courthouses and Federal buildings.  Any trained, qualified, properly screened Teacher should be allowed to carry or have access to a weapon, but don't look for it to happen anytime soon.  Just had to rant

I think Feinstein has had this bill waiting in the wings for years, all she needed was a national tragedy so she could blow the dust off of it. Part of the problem with AR style guns is they look scary to most people and the general public (and elected officials in particular) being gun dumb think they are way different than regular semi-autos. I heard one official yesterday say a semi-auto handgun could fire 4 to 5 rounds on less than a second. It's kind of ironic because it seems that more and more hunters are using black guns to hunt with than ever before. If someone was attacking me I would much rather it was someone that tried to get off 4 or 5 shots in a second or that had a cheapo 30 round clip ( that would probably jam) rather than some one with multiple 10 round clips who knew how to shoot!

Crime is always greater where there are less guns.
