Sadly, the Republicans lost it for themselves. There really isn't anyone else to blame. I am a conservative and what I believe is simple: small, non intrusive government that is kept on a tight leash and away from me. I don't want to hear any elected official blather about anything that is not part of his or her job as defined by our constitution. That is the core of political conservatism.
I don't believe that the government has any right or business to comment or even remark on who gets married or not. Government isn't in the marriage business. Take a position and you look like a hypocrite and get broad segments of our society annoyed who might otherwise listen to what we have to say. And not just gays: all those people who have gay friends or relatives or just believe in minding their own business.
You have old white men telling young women that they know better than them what they can do with their bodies. Know what? Good people with pure intentions can differ on the issue of abortion. Make that a political litmus test and you loose a broad swath of voters. Maybe you are right in your beliefs, maybe you are not but you aren't the one making that horrid decision. And you cannot know what it is like. And if you do know then you will probably keep your own council. And if you don't, do not presume to know better than those who are directly involved. In any event, it is not the place of old men to dictate to young women on what they can do with their bodies, and certainly, not if you want to win an election.
We rightly fear the growth of a welfare state. We can see what dependency on government has done to some European countries. But tarring all recipients of government money with the same broad brush is simply wrong. And worse than wrong, stupid. Particularly if such opinions come from people who spend more on a haircut than many folks earn in a week.
That's why we lost. Arrogance, presumptuousness, lack of humility and stupidity. This latest loss might well be for 12 years duration. I fully expect a new, shinier Hillary will emerge in 2012 and, if the last two elections are any indication, win.
Small responsive government is a message that a majority of Americans can get behind. It allows us liberty and does not presume to dictate in areas that are not constitutionally permitted. Positions on so called moral issues by people who want to lead us get rejected and that is a good thing. It is a good thing because it shows that there is a line that people will not let government cross when it comes to interference in their lives. And that, in itself, is manifestation of the most basic conservative principles.
We may have a shot against Hillary but not if we set ourselves up as arbiters of morality. That's being done by ruling classes already, in places like Iran, and NK and Saudi Arabia, and the outcome ain't pretty.
eta: and if we do have democrats in office for the next 12 years you can sure as hell count on a liberal supreme court for as long as many of us will live. And if that happens the game is well and truly over. But we blocked gay marriage

Excellent.
