Carved Stocks
« on: December 17, 2012, 04:34:40 AM »
This weekend I went to the Palm Beach County Gun Show and found two Handis with simple but nicely done carvings (stock and forearm) and that was from two different vendors.  The calibers offered were of no interest to me so I didn't commit to any.

The stocks were pallet grade, but once adorned with the carvings, looked very nice...extremely attractive.  Regrettably, no photos were allowed.

Does anybody here in the board have Handis with carved stocks?

As I can remember:

One was extremely simple.  It had only little dimples in the "pistol grip" area and all around the forearm.  Sort of what you would find in target guns.

The other one had like a basket weave in the "pistol grip" area as well as in the forearm plus a a small area of leaves and scrolls on the right side of the butt.

My son and I sort of "carve" out gunstocks. That is,we take a gun stock blank and carve away every thing that is'nt a gunstock, but we don't carve on them as decoration.  :)

If you are using such beautiful woods as shown in your pictures, decoration carvings are not needed  :)

I have been toying with the idea of carving, but I would have to acquire the skill. I have also looked into getting some laser engraving done, but I have always though the laser stuff looked too "commercial". Just curious to see what someone else has done.

Take a look at this beauty!

http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,215457.0.html

That is some workmanship.  There was also an engraved factory Buffalo Classic version made during H&R's "50th ???" (not sure of the year) anniversary.  The only person that I know of that had one on this forum was Brian56.  There was a thread with photos of it a while back, but I can't find it.

Been a woodcarver for 25 yrs but just getting a 45-70 Handi so we will see what the winter brings out. Love that old style acanthus leaf pattern with the textured background

Can't wait for you to post the results.  Wood with beautiful grain in itself is gorgeous, add to that a nicely done stock, that would be the icing on the cake.
