Hey edhurl, welcome to GBO!  I hope you got an answer to your original question as it seems the discussion has morphed away from it to some degree.  But you can tell how emotional the issue of price fixing is by the posts here!   ;D

Heck, one poor member was just about tarred and feathered once for posting an item with an exorbitant price on it.  He even said so in his post!   :o  But the truth is he just enjoyed the interaction and wanted to haggle a bit.   :-\ Me, I don't haggle!   8)

Others may just have an overinflated concept of the value of an item.  But that's his right as a seller!  An to paraphrase the rules, you don't post something like "YOU MORON!!!  >:(  You want $200 for a barrel I can get from the factory for $160!?  Darn idiot...  ::) "

Nope, if you don't like the price, don't buy the item or do your haggling with the seller via PM's.

And ya know, I think, as if anyone cares what I think..., that every opinion expressed here is the correct one!   :)  And everyone here may take opposite points of view depending on whether he is buying or selling!   ;D  That's fine.  No one can say another person is wrong in this area.  To use a term  I think from Cursillos: Feelings are neither right nor wrong, they're just feelings."

What I do if I see an item I want that I think is priced to high, and I don't mean $5 or $10 dollars, I drink that much in beer a night!   ::)  Anyway, I PM the seller with an open offer (not a low ball but what I feel the item is worth to me).  The seller is free to accept the offer at any time if he doesn't get the $ he wants.

If I ever sold anything, which I don't, I wouldn't feel right asking for any more then the going rate for the generic item.  For example, I wouldn't feel right asking anymore for my 7X57 barrel then I would any other caliber!   :-\

Now most will say that's kinda strange, and they wouldn't be wrong.  But they shouldn't say I'm wrong because It's just the way I see things.   ;)

Stick around pal, you'll find that the folk here are really great people!  Most of the time any problem in the classifieds originates with newer members who are used to other, more cut throat, forums!   :(  Everyone should do what you did; ask the question!   ;D

Oh, about those questions...  :-\  try not to ask ones that give me the opportunity to pontificate!   ;D  I do love to hear myself type...  :P

I have a frame in Illion now for a .223 Superlight Barrel.  I do both, fit them myself and have them done at H&R.  It just depends on what is available at the factory and what I find for sale elsewhere.  At the the moment, I have five spare frames.  Used barrels seem to fit well on one of them without modification.  It's very simple......even I can do it.  Yes, it is an investment keeping spares, but I feel it is well worth it.

That's the best "fitting" system around, and well worth the investment.

It's America you can ask what you want.

And here's the typical response I get. ::)  Not a real answer mind you... just the typical response.

I agree with Spanky.  Sure you can ask what you want, doesn't mean you'll get it, or the item is worth what your asking.

Spanky, I'm curious.  Who in your world should set the price of an item for sale.  The owner of the item or someone else?

The owner of the item of course. It would be nice if prices were set according to worth versus what the market will bear. A barrel costs $160 from the factory because you pay for shipping, tax and professional fitting.

If I buy a second hand barrel from you are you going to offer me professional fitting? Would you collect sales tax from me? Would you charge me shipping both ways? No... because you won't offer or can't legally collect these things.

With that in mind would you say it's fair for a private seller to command the same price as the factory?

If it is (in your world) fair for the individual to ask the same price then please enlighten me as to why? I'll go ahead and say it for you... and I quote.... "because it's mine and that's how much I want for it"   Sound about right??  I thought so.

Spanky

Spanky we are adults, if you don't like the price don't buy it.  This applies to this forum or any store or website.  No one owes you, and you don't deserve anything.

Really?
Look at my feedback and you'll see that I'm a very active trader.. I price my stuff fairly and I buy items that are priced fairly.

As far as anyone owing me or me deserving anything... where did you get that from?? I'd really like to see where I ever said anyone owed me a thing or where I deserved anything. Please show me.

Keep working at it kid... you might make a good trader someday. Until then maybe you could just sit back and learn... quietly. :)

What happens when three separate people buy the same barrel, one right after the next? The barrel gets used three times. If they all ask the price they paid for it, then the next guy gets a barrel that has been used by three separate people for the same price it cost the first guy. How is that right? In my world, that barrel should be sold for $70-$90. 8)

Buyer beware, only some people will give full disclosure, their prices will show that too. ;)

Thanks, Dinny
