Group Buy Proposal Idea: Barrel stubbing!
« on: August 23, 2012, 06:41:03 AM »
So, I found the idea of creating a barrel stub from an old shotgun barrel stub and thought--hey, I can do that on my lathe!

The problem is, I have no confidence in my internal threading skills (external threading of the new barrel blank is another story!).  I'd like to buy a tap and use the lathe to keep everything centered.

Anyone interested in sending me a barrel (hacked off in front of the underlug) and I can thread it for them?  We could split the cost of the stub ID reamer and threader and save each other a couple bucks.

Whaddya think?

I think that hacking off a barrel like you mention would mean making an illegal sawed off shotgun.  As I understand it, the barrel has to be bored out first so that it can no longer take a cartridge then it can be cut off.

I'm not in the market for a stub but I'm still looking to get a barrel rechambered.

You may have a point--it'd be better to leave the barrel whole prior to sending it to me, then.

It doesn't matter how long a barrel is if it is not connected to anything.

Shotgun may be the key word, I didn't really pay attention to that.

I can tell you from vast experience stubbing that it is much easier to just make a barrel nut for the breach end and counter bore the stub than it is to internal thread cutoff part.  Biggest problem is that you have an inerrupted cut due to the ejector notch.  Larry
