Barrel fitting question?
« on: December 07, 2012, 01:15:23 PM »
I'm on my first barrel fitting & have a quick question.

Is it normal to have to remove .040 from the pivot section (half circle gap) of the barrel lug I'm fitting?

When I started, the barrel would not clear enough to lock up & looks like this much material will need to be removed (Minimum).

Thanks, Jim

Just take off a little bit at a time and keep trying it.

I made the mistake once of going too long in between seeing if it locked up, and I took too much off. Got impatient and was in a hurry. Learned my lesson.

Well, that is kinda 'a lot', but how did you determine that?

I measured as close as I could between the distance of the front of the lug and the latch shelf with calipers. (between original barrel & the barrel I'm fitting).

Also I should've asked, Is a round file the best way to remove this much and still hold the form of the front of the lug?

I am curious; how much did you have to take off compared to your calculations?

I didn't do a final check, but I was way high!

I'd say I was alot closer to .010 than .040.

Did as suggested, took a little off and kept trying it, got there alot faster than I thought I would.
Thanks again.

It's real easy to go from not enough to too much and end up with a loose barrel, I've been doing them on the mill in .001" increments checking fit after each .001" cut, when I get close, I switch to .0005" increments between checks, end up with a perfect fit.

Glad that worked out Blu; I like to take measurements and calc too, just to find out if my thinking is on, but learned long ago that the true meaning of hand fitting is, well ,hand fitting ;D .

Tim, I'd like to see your method.
