No game, but great time
« on: November 27, 2012, 09:35:57 AM »
I worked the last two mornings and couldn't capitalize on opening day here in PA.  I was able to leave early today and took the Handi out ... And something more special too.  I was trying to cut fresh sign and track, but there was none to be found.  My special package kept picking up the first snow of the year and got his gloves wet so we quit early.  We had a great time though regardless.  I was able to show him a few day old big buck track, fresh turkey tracks, a couple scrapes, and a rub on a 4" diameter sapling.  He had fun and because of that, I did too.  One of these days we'll get one together, until then we can just keep building his woodmanship and knowlede of the different kind of game out there.

That's what it's all about.

I've had a great time hunting small game with my 10 year old son this year. We've done some deer hunting but it usually doesn't take him long to ask if we can hunt squirrels instead. Deer are tough to come by where I live and we can only shoot bucks so I let him pick what he wants to hunt. The main thing is that we're in the woods together.

Get the kid a small back pack. (School book bag will work).  Let him carry his own water bottle, extra gloves(two pairs), and extra socks (for when he steps in the wet puddles).   Keep it to that only so there is no real weight to tire the kid out.  You carry the snacks, and they will also be needed to keep him happy when his little stomach says he's hungry.  With water, snacks, dry gloves, and dry socks, you can keep a kid out for a long time.  Dry, warm, and interested, and they are happy.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

That's what being a parent is all about! You keep taking him out, and one day, he will get his first deer and memories with his dad, that no one will ever be able to replace.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.
