If you intend to have barrels added, then buy a CF rifle and not a pistol caliber or shotgun. The CF rifles use a SB2 receiver and just about any barrel can be fitted to it.

Thanks, Dinny
Great advice, then all you have to do is pick a caliber, and type of stock (synthetic or wood).

1. nope, so .280 is out probably. I have hundreds of .308 shells lying around because of the death of my woodsmaster 742.

Since you have .308 brass, if you want to save money on reloading, I would definitely consider a caliber based on the .308 case.  I would recommend either .308  ::) , or 7-08 (just use the 308 brass).  BTW this leads us right back to .28 Cal. bullets.  ;D   Both have a great selection of bullets to choose from.

So after buying the starter kit I would need, primers, lead and what else?
A Reloading Manual.  Got to have at least one!

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Thanks to all!  I kick myself daily after giving away a press along with the .45 dies 20 years ago.  Did't think I would ever use it and I have a tendency to keep things a little too long.  Still not sure how much it will save me since I don't shoot all that often.  I have more brass for the .308 but the fun in shooting, and cost of shells, make my 45 LC seem to be what I should be reloading.  Looks like for around $200 you could get started reloading a caliber or two.
Thanks, Jer
