My 7600 experance
« on: October 02, 2012, 04:44:36 AM »
I feel that I should share this. I bought a 7600 earlier in the summer. I ran the serial number with Remington and it was assembled in Feb. of this year.I bought a Leupold V_-1 3x9x40 for it along with steal rings and base. I could never get the rifle to hold proper zero in fact the dealer in which I have been doing business with for the last 35 years told me the only way to level the scope was to shim the rear scope base.when I first bought it Still couldn't get any consistanly If zeroed at 25 off at 50 if zeroed at 50 off at 100yds zero off at every other distance.. Took the rifle back. The dealer tried to mount another new scope and same problem. Tried Nikon scope same problem  still had to shim the rear no matter what scope we used. They were going to exchange the rfile  and the same exact problem when they went to mount the scope. The only thing we could figure out is that the barrel was either bad or were the factory mate it to the receiver was bad. I got my money back and bought a non-Remington bolt action. Mounted the same scope and had the rifle zeroed in 4 shots. Then shot for a 100yd group and got moa. I realized that anyone can make a bad one. It will be a very long time before Remington will see any of my money again.I case anyone was wondering the rifle was a 308.

With the facts and details not being clear, it sounds like the scope base used may have been the wrong one, or somehow compromised.

I agree!!! The receivers have minor changes thru the years and this effects based. I have a mid 50's 35 rem I drilled and tapped for the correct weaver base. Well the only way I was able to sight it was with Millett angle lock rings and my lapping bar.

Now I did this myself and know its done correctly. Unused current and old stock Weaver bases for this receiver nothing changed.

I Mounted a Leupold QD mount in dovetail bases on a late 70's vintage 270. This one also gave
its owner some sifting problems. I removed the weaver bases for the afore mentioned QD base. No issues and same "problem" scope worked perfectly.

For what ever reason bases for these rifles from weaver or the receiver and weaver base are sproblatic.

My son and I have found with the Remington pumps you have to be particular how the forearm is rested at the bench. We both have an Uncle Bud's Bull Bag and while they work great with bolt actions, they make the point of impact with our pumps high and right (his is a 760, mine a 7600) . I bought a Caldwell front rest and had to mount a "sausage" (straigh wih no ears) bag on it. One with "ears" causes me to scatter the shots for some reason. The ears grab the forearm when I shoot and blows the group. Some people have posted they rest the magazine and rear stock at the bench.

The first set was Weaver base and Millett angle lock rings. The second was Leopold QD rings and base. The Leopold rep was their and couldn't get the scope leveled either no matter what they tried. With or without shims. When I shot the rifle I was using sand bag resting the fore stock on the bag. Different scopes didn't work and they tried it on another rifle. The dealer sent the rifle back to Remington.

I have a 760 rechambered to .358 win and a limited run 7600 in .35 Remington.  Both are as accurate as any bolt guns I own also.  I do what Dave in WV said, I rest the magazine and butt stock on bags, not the forearm.  My 760 carbine in .358 Win has been shot so much that when I bag it as described, the rifles lifts up off the bag, the action opens due to recoil, and the empty is ejected 6 feet to my right.  I have had guys at the range tell me I'm loading it too hot until I explain to them that the 760/7600 series of rifles won't eject a too hot load.  Sticky extraction in those rifles is the FIRST sign of too hot a load.

Sorry you had the trouble.  I have a 7600P, a 16.5 inch barrel in .308.  With the factory ghost ring, I get 3MOA, 2MOA with a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot and 1MOA or better with a scope set on 9X.  All are my mild handloads of a 147 fmj or 150 hunting bullet over 39 grs. of H-335.

My brother has a 760 in .300 Sav that shoots 2MOA with factory ammo and a 1967 Weaver K-4 scope.  My father had a 760 in .35 Rem that must have been very accurate.  He never shot a paper target in 40 years with it, but killed every deer that got in his field of vision.

I wish we all had a dealer as good as yours, who made good on the deal.

I'm sorry I had the trouble also. The dealer was Great! I did buy a bolt action Ruger All American and its a great rifle. I didn't get  my money back but a store credit That's OK because I buy all my guns through them anyway. I'm just kind of shocked at Remington for letting this rifle out!

I read some where you got to use the Rem scope bases with  these.  I know I have them on my 7400- zero problems with getting on target and staying there. ;D

I had a customer bring me a 7600 a couple of years ago that was scettering shots all over the where . Turned out the barrel was loose , right from the factory ! Tightened up the barrel , and it came right into it . I have never encountered the problem you described , and I've worked on a hundred or more 760s & 7600s . When you say it was off at each distance , you didn't specify windage or elevation . Elevation would be adjusted with shims , if need be . Windage can be corrected with windage adjustable scope bases (Leuplod adjustable rear) or Millet Angle-Lok rings ! Once in a great while , for whatever reason . the receivers on some of the 7600s made in the last 5 years , have holes that are less than perfectly aligned . As a rule , if you can attach the base without having to move anything , it can be aligned . I would have liked to have seen yours  !
