7.62x54mmr to 35x54mmR ? achievable? Practical?
« on: November 12, 2012, 04:29:42 PM »
Any data on doing this? Would it be practical for the handy to achieve higher velocities for the sningle shot platform (muzzle loader in my state) in a rimmed cartridge to avoid the headspace problems of the 35 Wheelen and achieve higher velocities than the 357 max without necessarily getting to 35 wheelen energy. Any potential here? I figured it has been done. Any links or leads?
Thanks, ear

The 356 will likely do anything a wild cat like the .358x54MMR would. And do so with out hi cost of special dies, reamers and making cases.

I love a wild cat as much as the next guy. But at least for me cost is a factor and custom dies are up there... Just saying. ;)

No worries brother, we have beat bigger horses to death. LOL

There was also a thread on a 35/30 a short time back. That is another idea.

I haven't played with my 356 too much. I was so happy with the accuracy of my starting load I kinda stalled. But in my 358's I have shot quite a few 158's at targets with good accuracy. I don't see why this would e any different.

Brass for the x54r is very tough to come by.  Graf's will have it now and then, usually not though.  Midway has Norma but it's over a buck a round.

7.62x54r brass is plentiful where I'm at. I see it fall out of the back of pickup trucks everyday. It's swept to the ground to be one with the Earth like the US taxpayers are paying for it. Oh yeah, we are. Too bad I can't bring any of it back with me. :( on all accounts.

Thanks, Dinny

I'm sorry you're where that's a common sight Dinny.  No good place to be.

Isn't what you're seeing Berdan primed though?  Tough to reload.

No need to be sorry, Cat. I made the choice to serve. They can take my arms, legs, even my life, but my family and I will never regret my decision to serve.

Yes, I believe they are all Berdan primed.

Thanks, Dinny
