Reloading for 7mm-08
« on: October 29, 2012, 11:34:40 AM »
Since we're stuck indoors today because of Sandy, I just dug out some 7mm-08 brass.  I have a load of 139 grain heads.  Also thinking about using them for my Rem. 7mm Mauser.  What's your favorite reloading recipe for the Handi in 7mm-08.  If you also have one for the 7mm Mauser, please post it.

Please list; bullet maker, type, weight, and powder.  Also, if you have a comment about actual performance on game, let's hear it.  Thanks.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

I have owned 3, 7-08's from H&R.  All would shoot under an inch with most any load in stuck in them.  I am presently shooting 139/140 bullets (hornady) over 48 gr of H4350.  H4350 has proven to be an accurate powder in several cartridges I have loaded.  It's perfect in the 7-08 because it becomes a compressed powder (100% load density) at the max loads.  You cannot overload the 7-08 and still seat a bullet to the proper OAL, which I just take from the loading books and don't try to seat out farther for the H&R.  I have also had excellent results with Speer 130 gr bullets over the same 48.0 grains of H4350.  I also load 120 gr Nosler BT's over the same load.  All shoot within an inch of each other and all have shot to an inch or less.  Can't help you with the 7mm Mauser but you should be able to find some folks with pet loads in that.  44 Man

I have a load of 139 grain heads.
Presumably the Hornady 139 BTSP ?
My NEF 7-08 likes that bullet with 40grns of Varget, moa at 100 and 200,, seat it closer to the lands,,
my notes say COAL 2.79 and No Crimp

It also like Barnes TTSX and Nosler BT  both 120grn with H4895, also no crimp, but both of those like a long jump, I know the Barnes are .120 off
found elsewhere

Sorry, I haven't been on to check this OP, but I just got my power back, Saturday night.  Spent most of Sunday cutting up a big pine (three stories tall) that landed on the house, thankfully it was close to the house and didn't build up enough momentum to do serious damage.  Lost power thanks to Sandy, have a generator, but it was being used to run the frig, freezer, and lights. Thanks for the replies.

Anyone using IMR powders?  Or some 7x57Mauser loadings (hopefully) for the Handi?

140gr TTSX with Big Game and 139gr Hornady with Varget, both shoot excellent in my 20" Superlight Handi at 100yds.

IMR 4064. Either the Nosler 140 grain Partition or the Barnes 120 grain TSX (or TTSX). Charges will range from 41 to 43.5 grains.  You  will push 3000 fps with the lighter bullet with a 22 inch barrel.

i don't own a 7mm-08 but i do have a 7mm  Mauser i have shot for years. it's a model 95  Mauser it has a  Canjer trigger bolt has been altered   monti  carlo walnet stock.+ shortened barrel these are nice shooter's i shoot 115 grn   Speer hollow point boat tails pretty much the same load as the 7mm-08 this gun has taken many jack rabbit - deer and one bull elk. my son has used it on deer. it hasn't been used for years i need to get it to the range. i have often looked at the 7mm-08 and thought that is a great combination loads look the same as  Mauser you can't go wrong the 7mm bullet it  is an accurate bullet. i have wondered how it would be nice necked down in a 30-06 case.i hope you are doing ok after sandy?that had  to be scary good luck and hang in there. ;)

I use 46 grains of H380 pushing Barnes 140 grain TTSX, WW Brass and WW primers.  This averages 2,730 fps out of my 22 inch barrel Browning X-Bolt.  Should work in a Handi, too.  Barnes recommeds 46.5 grains as a maximum load.  I have not pushed it up that far as the 46 grain load is supremely accurate and plenty fast enough.

I've never seen a store sell Remington primers. I see CCI and WIN everywhere.

Who retails REM primers nationally?
