Thank you gentlemen....It appears if a man has a choice that the SB2 receiver would be preferred over the SB1.

The guys that have answered so far know way yonder more than little ole neophyte me, but from what little I have picked up yes definitely the  SB2 would always be preferred.

I am picking up another H&R .44 Rem mag for the family and ran across both the SB1 and SB2. I will check out the FAQS section and see what if any other barrels can be fitted on the SB2 for Dad to play around with.  :D

Tar; get the SB2, It will handle the shotguns and 44 mag..but will also handle the higher pressure of the centerfires..Rimfires of course, have a different pin location..so are not interchangeable...except for the Versa-pack..which is rimfire & shotgun only.  I run a 20 ga on my Versa...but haven't tried a .44 mag.

something else that always catches folks... For some reason H&R chose to imprint SB2 on some barrels.... Some of those barrels are on SB1 frames. (357 & 44 magnums)

Early (er) 44's and 357's WHERE ON SB2 frames AND cast frames. (These early guns also had sites!) guns before mid 80's also had a cast frame. But its stregnth was greater then a Sb1 but not as strong as a current SB2. These are the 158/258 receivers. Large and small firing pins made the sifference.  But that was BEFORE THE SB DESIGNATION! So its is understandable people are confused.

Its the FRAME that's a "SB" anything. Before 1987 there was no SB designation and no hi intensity chamberings. These hi intensity calibers came with the stronger made SB2 receivers.

Again, there is a ton of information to wade thru, but Tim has worked tirelessly to get it all in one searchable spot. It's our FAQ's!

Thanks for the replies guys! The H&Rs I am looking at are at Budsgunshop online. So they are new production. While looking at the product descriptions I noticed the designation numbers differences and realized they were on different frames and hence the questions. Thanks for helping to clear things up for me.

Wow CW!
I didn't realize there was that much diversity among the receivers.  Seems as if perhaps H&R went the wrong route.  Just how costly would it have been to standardize the stronger SB2 frame and make sure the pivot pin to action face dimensions were uniform so an assortment of barrels could be stocked by a gun shop?  The additional over-the-counter barrel sales would recoup some of the cost. Maybe adding just $5 added to each initial gun and each replacement barrel would cover it?
I doubt that is likely to happen now, even though they could have a fresh start by altering the pivot pin to action face dimension by a significant amount.and placing identifying marks on barrels and receivers.
