22 hornet factory ammo in K hornet question
« on: October 04, 2012, 05:34:03 PM »
I just got a deal on 100 old rem 22 hornets.  My hornet is reamed to K hornet.  Wondering if I should just shoot them as is, or pull the bullets and reload for fire forming some other load.  Would be nice if I didn't ruin the brass.  Thanks.

Put a small 'o' ring on the casehead against the rim, will hold it tight against the breech blowing out the shoulder, not stretching the case. Neck size after that, will last a long time.

Then you'll have fireformed brass!! Don't expect full velocity tho, I chronied a few factory Rem 30-30 rounds in my 30-30AI Handi, velocity dropped almost 300fps, the Hornet won't be as much a drop tho since it's a much small case.

Thanks.  Forgot about the O ring idea.  And just found 'Freds' info on fire forming in a Handi.  So I'm good to go.  Should have googled first.

Already have some 30-30 AI brass from a while back.  But, I'll be trying the same above in my reamed Topper 30-30 barrel also as soon as I fit a sight or mount to the smaller radius barrel top.

The "O" ring will not do anything for you, the Hornet has a rim to seat on.  Larry

Just shoot 'em, adding an o'ring will change head spacing / shoulder location

The o ring will not change the headspace if it is right. It will however correct headspace if the recess for the rim is cut to deep. If it is cut deep, when the firing pin strikes the primer, the case moves foward then the neck grips the chamber stretching the case back to the breech. If the case is resting against the breech then it just blows the shoulder out to fit the chamber, in turn leading to longer case life. Longer case life is what the op was trying to achieve.

Since the Hornet headspaces off the rim, anything between the rim and a properly cut chamber will alter the head spacing.  Now if the rim is cut too deep you are correct.  When my chamber was cut the original rim area of the chamber was not cut.  A steel shim washer was put there to keep the reamer from re-cutting the rim.

If you set the reloading dies for neck sizing only and do not set the shoulder back when re-sizing case life will be excellent.
