223 Handi at the range
« on: September 29, 2012, 03:24:42 PM »
This was the best group of the day. Load was PMC brass, neck sized only, 24.5g IMR 3031, BR-4 primers, Nosler 55g Varmint Ballistic Tip. Rifle forearm is shimmed with an o-ring. Range was 100 yds firing from a sandbag rest. Next step is a trigger job. Keeping the groups this tight with the factory trigger is challenging.

Thanks,
  Stephen

That's impressive for a handi! I have a .223 handi that I have all but given up on. BEST I can get is right at 2" at 100, which would be more than acceptable for most people, but I bought this rifle for predator hunting, and would like to take head-shots on coyotes over 100. I'm still playing with it though, and am determined to get it under 1 MOA! That shouldn't be too much to ask, should it? BTW, thanks for the idea! Haven't tried shimming the forearm with an o-ring. However, thinking the bbl may need floating, I have fired it without the forearm, with my front rest under the receiver, and noticed little difference, if any at all. Interesting trick though, will store that thought for future reference.

Good shooting.  Mine did this on my last range trip.  Prepping a hundred using A-max 52gr. boat tails also to try with Accurate 2230 which is a powder designed for .223.  My buddy got out of reloading and gave me a pound, so thought I'd give that a try.  8)

Range was 100 yards from a kneeling position shooting over the burning barrel.  ;)  The black square is 1"

That doesn't seem to help mine... Mine is the bull bbl "ULTRA" model. Very much like the one in CW's photo there, except mine is blued.
