Went to help a friend run a bunch of cast today and we broke in a new fella in the process. Got him started with some .357 RFN LEEs and set him in front of the Star lube-sizer. When we took a break to change over to 45s (moulds and dies), I took him out back and handed him my .223 Synthetic Youth with some 50 grain RDOs ahead of a light charge of W231.
I think I heard of this phenomenon here recently and thought it was funny, but it happened to me today too.
Every time he pulled the trigger, he started giggling and looked over his shoulder at me with a big grin.
He just got done dropping a big chunk of money in a couple very nice, fancy rifles but he thought the Handi was the coolest thing he'd ever seen.
Since I already had him giggling, I got out the Rossi '92 and gave him a handful of medium-range cast bullet loads to run through that. Same effect; fire, giggle, work the lever, fire, giggle, work the lever, lather, rinse, repeat......
I though I had the Rossi sold at that point. He wanted it. Then I opened my big mouth and explained that, while the Rossi is great, what I REALLY want is a Handi in .357 like the .223 he just shot and I was selling the Rossi to pay for it.
Well, once he realized the Handi can be had in .357 (while not necesarrily easily), he didn't want the Rossi any more. He wants a HANDI!
So, I blew a potential sale, which would have funded the Handi .357 and some components, AND generated extra competition for whatever might appear on the racks in any of the local shops!
I guess I shot myself in BOTH feet with that little demonstration.
