.17 Hornet, the project begins...

From what I've heard, all the H&R barrels are made from the same steel.  Mine fits tight and and I haven't gotten around to trying to make it fit better.

I have 2 other rifles in .22 K-Hornet so getting on on a Handi doesn't excite me.  However a .221 Fireball would.

Not true, H&R rimfire and shotgun barrels are 1137 mild steel, centerfire rifle barrels are 4140 alloy, there's no difference in  SS1 rimfire, SB1 or SB2 rifle frame dimensions, the only difference is what they're made of and the fact that each barrel is mated to it's respective frame when fitted at the factory, they aren't one size fits all, so there can be big differences in fit, and of course firing pin location on the SS1 frame. The only modern H&R frames that have been made to accept only its respective barrels were/are the Sidekick and SB2 shotgun frames.

ps.....stainless barrels are 400 series with magnetic qualities.

Interesting.  You'd think the .17 HMR would have a harder barrel since it shoots a jacketed bullet at over 3000 FPS.  Perhaps, I'll send my barrel out for cryogenic treatment after the chamber is cut...

17hmr velocities are short of 2600fps, even the lightest of offerings.

The project is moving forward. Wayne York at Oregunsmithing has agreed to fit and rechamber the barrel.

I'm in the process of moving to Willamina, OR and I won't be able to send it in until later.  I hope to have a range report by next spring.  If all goes well, I'll be using it to blast gray diggers in my brother-inlaw's orchards later next spring...
