Shorty question - 22 AI hornet
« on: September 14, 2012, 08:35:22 AM »
How about a shorty Hornet?  Since it's AI now how velocity significant will shorter barrel be with this caliber?  If I do, where can I find 'contender' loads for shorter barrels? Have 4225, 2400 & 4198 I can use for this caliber.  2400 is pistol powder & fastest burn, so figure on trying that first.

Thanks all...

My 22K Hornet is 20" long. I get 3150 fps with a 34 grain bullet with low pressure loads. I would think that a 16" barrel (shortest rifle) would only be 100 - 150 fps slower.

hornet AI known as the K hornet.
2400 got it's name from being the first powder to actually get to 2400 fps in a hornet.
Could likely go to a 16 inch barrel with out much velocity loss altho the muzzle blast is going to increase substantially.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

All 3 of my K-Hornets are 16.25". I have never chronographed any of them, or any load, but they sure are fun. And you wouldnt recognize any velocity loss...

Incidentally, I have not experienced any increased muzzle blast. Certainly not like my shorty 30-30s.

Ya might try Hodgdon's LilGun in the K-Hornet, sure makes the regular Hornet buzzzz right along.  I get higher velocity at less pressure than the H-110 loadings in my 2 Hornet barrels.  DP

What is the report like on the 16.25" barrel?  One thing I like about the 22" Hornet is the low report.

I cant say really... I never paid any attention. It certainly isn't anything bothersome to me. Even without consciously listening for louder report, I think that I would have noticed if it got too much louder.

".......hornet AI known as the K hornet".

I belive there is a difference between the AI and the K, but stand corrected.
Isn't the Ackerly shouldered at 40 degrees and the K at 35?
Can someone either confirm or refute this?

I believe you're correct but the Ackley version has been misidentified for so long as a K-Hornet, it's kinda stuck.  I have 2 rifles with the 40 degree shoulder K-Hornet and they look just like the Ackley version to me.  Also both  of the RCBS and Hornady K-Hornet die sets I have are for the 40 degree shoulder.  I'll have to check my loading books but I'm sure my oldest book (a Speer manual from the early 70s) shows the K with a 40 degree shoulder.

Either way it's a big improvement over the original .22 Hornet.

I'm sure there are plenty of fine folks at SpecialtyPistols that have short barrel (down to 10") loads for the Hornet and variations.
