Forearm retention on stubbed Handi?
« on: September 14, 2012, 06:10:53 AM »
Hi All,

On stub projects, do you all make your stubs long enough to pin the forearm to it, use barrel bands around the barrel, or some other method of attaching the forearm?

Thanks,
jkpq45

On my two the donor barrel (from the stub) was cut about a half inch above and below the lug, forming a "ring" with the lug stud sticking out. It is then refit to the new barrel as a band, in the correct position, afterwards.

Works very well.

I only have 1 stubbed barrel. it is a heavy barrel and it is simply drilled and tapped for a button head screw, that is slightly smaller than the 1/4 X 20 that comes with the Handi Rifle. Keep in mind that mine is a .224" bore with a heavy barrel that is over 1" in diameter.

As I understand the question, I would say no.  The "stub" is usually the drilled out rear 4"or so of the original barrel w/lug assembly attached.  This is way short of the original forend attachment point and a new attachment method is needed on the donor barrel.
Many make way too much of the forend attachment.  It simply retains the forend and and has nothing to do with the action's lockup.  In a pinch, duct tape works fine!

I tested a 300 AAC/BO stub last week with a hose clamp around the barrel & Foreend. :o   It worked and I think it was worthy of a "Profino" designation. ;D   My final solution, assuming it doesn't break, is a barrel band made from a 3/4" wide piece off a 12 ga shotgun barrel.  I relieved the ID of the band on a slight taper until it would interference fit at the right spot on the stub barrel.  Then I drilled and tapped the band and used a short piece of 1/4-20 all thread and a cutoff 1/4-20 hex coupling to make the stud.  It is expoxied to the barrel, probably should be soldered but I love the easy way out. ;)

When I stub a barrel I cut the old forearm mounting nut off from the donor barrel with a plasma cutter and weld it to the new barrel with a MIG .I use some double sided tape to attach it in place.Put the nut in the forearm apply the tape stick the forearm in place, push the nut up to the barrel, remove the forearm gently and weld.
