Marlin 1889 38-40 Love the old stuff!
« on: October 01, 2012, 12:47:00 PM »
On my way to pick-up a Lyman Mini Sharps that I bought off a fellow on the internet, I stopped in a small gun shop. And sitting in the rack was this pristine 1889 Marlin, 38-40. Perfect working condition and a perfect 9.99 out of 10 bore! The action is smoother than most of my other lever actions that I've spent hours on getting them slick. I took it to the range and off-hand it put ten rounds into a 4" circle at 25 yds. Perfect for my Cowboy Action Shooting!

i own and shoot two 38-40,s, a win 1892 takedown and a rem 14-1/2. the load is a 180 cast bullet with 10grs of unique. both rifles have ex bores and no leading at all and will shoot better than 3 inch groups at 75 yds from a rest. eastbank.

I assume you know not to shoot jacketed bullets in the old soft steel barrel. Alliant shows a max load of Unique at 7.4 grs with a 180gr lead bullet. I'm shooting 7.0grs Unique outa mine and the 1898 Colt Thumb buster. Accuracy has been from the rifle at less than 2" groups at 50 yds. The Thumb Buster shoots about the same at 25 yds.
By the way, you send me the rifle and I'll send you a nice feather.....that way we both can be tickled pink! And yes, I'm envious!

FWIW, if you need to buy brass, skip the Winchester brass and buy Starline. It's far better brass. The bullets I shoot I get from Missouri Bullet.

I shoot hotter loads (similar to the 10 gr of Unique) of 38-40 from my Ruger Blackhawk and often use Berry's copper plated bullets.  I wonder if copper plated bullets would be OK to use in the older steel??  Does anyone know?
Unfortunately, I don't have one of those leverguns but sure would love to have one!   Nice stuff guys!
