444 vs 35 Whelen
« on: June 17, 2012, 03:53:09 PM »
local gun shop has 2 new in box handi's, but i can only get one, which one do you guys think?

i already have a .17hmr, .223, .44mag, 45-70, .270, and 30-06 handi,

i'm thinking the .35 would be a good addition since i already have a .44 mag and a 45-70 the 444 might be redundant, and i dont think i would ever take the .444 out over the .45-70

but i dont handload so i'm worried about the availability of 35 whelen ammo, are there any inherent flaws in the .35 whelen in a handi rifle? for some reason i remember hearing about some a few years back?

Thanks in Advance, Zack

Zack,

I've got two Handi's in .444 and two in 35 Whelen.  I've also got two Encores in 35 Whelen.  Heck I've also got two Handi's in 45-70.  I've used all three quite a bit.  Especially the .444 and 35 Whelen.  Miss. primitive weapon season gives us plenty of opportunities.  I like both and use both.  I load 270 gr. Speer Deep Curls in the .444 and 200-225 gr. bullets in the Whelen.  I will use any of them on any given day.  My only preference being the 35 Whelen when I know I'm going to be looking at longer range possibilities.  I can add on an extra 150 yards with it over the .444 or 45-70.

Given the calibers you already have and only wanting to buy one rifle at this time I would recommend the 35  Whelen.  Ammo is readily available from Remington, Hornady and Federal.  There are other companies making it as well but you should have no problems finding the ones listed above.  There are more factory loads for the Whelen than there is for the .444.

There has been problems with misfires in rifles chambered in 35 Whelen, Handi's and Encores.  I believe they're doing better with them than in the past.  I would not hesitate to buy one.  Matter of fact, even though I didn't need it, I bought a Handi about a month ago just because of the price.  As always, go with the one that appeals to you.

Robert.

Hornady Superperfromance ammo seems to be the cheapest in factory offerings and has a 200gr bullet at 2900fps.
The ones manufactured from March of 2010 to mid Sept. 2010 had problems with some lots of misfires due to transfer bar problems which H&R will fix free. i have one from that time frame and it seems to be working fine with my reloads.
I can just send in the reciever if i ever have any problems.
It definitely has the knockdown power and also longer range capablility over the 444 or 45-70. IF you are shooting less than 200 yards, the 45-70 will be plenty.

Either would be a good rifle. To me, it is a matter of preference, unless you are going to be doing your shooting past 250 yards or so, then the 35 Whelen would get the nod. of course, unless you are going to be shooting big bears out that far, the 30-06 that you already have should handle it. On second thought, buy both.

I personally bought a 444 over a 45-70 because I could care less about what the horse solders carried (this IS the 21st Century). If I want to remember anything like that I will just watch an old Army - Indian movie, then I remember how crude and fragile fire arms were. If I am going to shoot a modern, rifle I want to shoot a modern case. If I want to shoot an old case like a 45-70 or a 45 Colt, then I will shoot a trap door Springfield or an 1873 SSA colt or replicas. But that is me, and I am in the minority here.

I already loaded for the 44 Mag so bullets were readily available to me and I did not have to stock yet another size. Plus the 444 had a good reputation for accuracy and it will put down anything that walks, crawls or flies in North/South America. If I would go to Africa, cough never, I would be taking some thing besides a single shot 35 Whelen, 444 or a 45-70 for big stuff and for the smaller stuff a 30-06 would do the trick.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Buy them both and sell your 44Mag.  You can always download the 444M to 44Mag but you can't go the other direction.

Two standard barrels fitted to your receiver with fitting and shipping is a little under $290.  Simple decision for me....
