ATI Tacticl stock opinions (UPDATED)
« on: May 28, 2012, 06:01:46 AM »
Was wondering if anyone has one or has used one in the past and what their opinion is.
I am considering putting one on my .223, but wanted some input from members before I do.

Have a MC stock on it now, do not care for it for target and yote use.
Thanks for your input.

I have one on a .22 rimfire just for fun but there have been instances where they have collapsed when used on larger calibers with more substantial recoil and inflicted injury to the shooter (someone may be able to past a picture). You may be able to get by with one on a .223 because of the little recoil but I would not suggect using one a a larger caliber centerfire rifle or on a shotgun. I think even use on a .410 would be questionable...<><.... :)

I did a search and nothing came up. Clicked your link and read through it, that stock is not for me.
Guess I will just have to go with a straight synthetic stock to replace the MC stock.
End of discussion.   Thanks Tim

You have a couple alternatives that may work for you, the Varmint which can be shortened or lengthened by adding or removing spacers, or maybe the Survivor or Tamer stock.

I have one on my 44 mag with no problems.  The recoil pad is very good to excellent and it weighs 8.6 pounds with a 3x9 scope and 6 in the shell holder.  It handles well too.  The stock has some slop in it, to stiffen it up I put a strip of heavy duty Velcro (loop side only) on top of the rail the stock slides over to take out the slop.  It's as stiff as any other synthetic stock I've used, and its adjustable.  The only con I've found is it doesn't fit in my shooting rest as I would like.  Some bench bags should solve the problem.

Ya gotta mean 6.8 lbs.  I just weighed myself and then me with the  22 inch .445 on a synthetic MC stock and 9 .445s in the shell holder, and a 3-9x40 and it's somewhere between 6.5 and 7 lbs.  As far as the ATI stock is concerned, I had one on a 17HMR for about ten minutes.  Hated it.  It felt like a toy.

I would not have one on anything more than a 223. Actually I simply would not have one..

BUT Cannon brings up a good idea, if one could be "pinned" and re-enforced so it cannot collapse. I can see the benefits of a pistol grip and a thin light butt stock.

But it is ugly as all get out...  LOL

Tim,
Thanks for the suggestions on stocks, had a varmint stock on my 22 hornet once, hated it.
I have two with straight stocks, so I suppose I will replace the MC with same style.

And thanks for all the input from you Handi guys, much appreciated.

On the ATI stock are they breaking or are people hitting the release lever, It does hang down very close to the shooting table. I had one given to me after a friend read that they were  collapsing. The first thing I did was trim the release lever so it is 1/2 the original length.

CW,has a point.I like the pistol grip,it changes the relationship of the trigger finger. It now has more or less a straight pull, whereas the "standard" stock the trigger finger  is at an angle .To me the felt trigger pull is lighter. As to the point of it being "ugly" you guys have not seen me. :o  Doug

Nope, I just changed scopes and it's 8.62 lbs with the ATI set.  It's just over 10 lbs with an older pallet shotgun stock set.  I weighted all the components and hardware individually on a digital kitchen scale in ounces and converted to lbs. (Excel spreadsheet).  I was surprised they weighted that much, but they do.  :-[

ATI Stock
« Reply #17 on: June 07, 2012, 01:52:53 AM »
After much deliberation I decided on the ATI stock for my .223 Ultra. Was able to make it to the range yesterday and try it out.
I like the stock very much, it suits me well for bench shooting, and although I am still developing a load for this new to me rifle I was getting  1" groups @ 100 yds with 50 gr. V-Max bullets and Varget powder.

One problem I saw right off before I even shot it was that the release lever was going to set right on my rear bag. So I cut a piece of rubber block and inserted it in the underside of the lever with double sided tape so the lever could not move up. Worked very well and is hardly noticeable.

I would like to thank all those again who posted their opinions pro or con on the ATI stock discussion thread.
