Don't like peeps but don't want a scope?
« on: June 05, 2012, 07:48:44 AM »
I have two 20ga slug guns that I don't want a scope on for the "handy" aspect but I can't see well enough for standard open sights and I am just not comfortable with peep sights. I used a round file larger than the  back sight opening and made the gap bigger. Left just enough of the old sight opening to give a center for the wider gap. Finally filed the back sight out to the bottom of the original bottom. By steps I reached a back sight opening that I can do an acceptable job of shooting with for a 100 yard shot. (20 ga hunting remember) Worth a try if you can't see as you once could, don't like peeps and you don't want to wear a scope. ear

I think you made a "ghost ring" sight.  Larger rear sight than a traditional peep, but small enough to center the front sight for accuracy.

It sounds like a ghost ring sight with out the top of the ring to me too. They are very good for quick snap shooting at targets that are not too far away. Quick target acquisition; acceptable accuracy. They work for rifles such as a lever action where the action is going to be close and quick as well as slug guns. The smaller the ring the more accuracy you can expect but at the cost of quickness until you get down to a peep.

I think I'd call it more of an 'express sight'.........watch out for lions, tigers and bears  ;) .

Try removing the screw in peep all together.  I've done that when it was raining and water kept getting on the peep.  Worked OK for me.  It's like a big ghost ring.  Check out the Holographic sites.  No magnification, just a red dot.

I like the TruGlo sights.  I have the large Ghost Ring version with the hooded front on my Muzzle loader and love it.  Very quick on target.  TruGlo also makes a version that has a Ghost Ring and standard v-groove rear parts in one set, so you can switch for different styles of shooting.

This is a bit of a poor picture of the sight picture of the one on my Muzzle loader:

This is a side view of the gun:

These are pretty well made machined sights and I've used the fist one there for 3 years or so now and they come with several screw sizes and dovetail adapters too for various fits.  ;)

With the open top on the rear site the target is easy to find. The front bead settles in the back groove and centers just fine. I can hit a target well enough that I will hunt with it as is. I have peep sites that I have tried in every manner. Inserts in and out. I didn't like peeps as a kid when I could see well and I don't like them now. This works for me. ear

Sourdough,

I first read the "ghost ring" term back in the 1960s, applied to a standard receiver sight with the aperture removed, so one has just a "ghost" of a ring.  It wasn't until many years later that what is now called a ghost ring sight came out.  I just wish I could remember which of the gun writers it was who first coined the phrase.

I have the same problem ....aged eyes.  A year or two ago I bought a Ruger .177 Air gun.  It came with a scope but I found the tru-glo type sights...dovetail rear..green and post front with orange-red bead, which were original equipment gave me a better picture than the scope, especially at air gun ranges.
So; the scope is on one of my rimfires..and I use the irons...

I also like the idea of an 'express' rear sight, but two things a I discovered for myself about the front sight-posts is that the 3/32" diameter beads or fiber optics are much easier to see than the 1/16" size.

Also the Marble's orange fiber optics are a helluva LOT BRIGHTER than the Williams RED fiber optic front post in the same size!

QUESTION:  Can any of the rear handgun sights -Patridge style (not "par tridge!") rear apertures work for you, 'Ear?  ???

A hunting buddy of mine has a Winchester 94 and ended up removing the scope in favor of fiber optic open sights like what Ironglow describes. If I didn't like peep sights so much I'd probably use those, they show up nice and bright. They look similar to this:

Right on DB, that's what my air rifle sights are like, and they work as well as any iron sights did when I had "young" eyes..

I went with a Williams Twilight rear, .150 diameter hole with a dayglo front.  This has worked well for me out to 150 yards or so.

I have done the same thing with my hunting and pellet pistols. Opened up the rear site.  With a larger rear opening the blur is less obvious and I can still get a good dark rear site and center the front bead well. ear

That's good to know, I'm tempted to try a set on my .357 Maxi.
