Finally got a 45-70
« on: June 02, 2012, 10:12:27 AM »
After all these years of being a illegitimate Handi owner I purchased a new in box regular 45-70 (Store had the marked down to $185.00 ) Now what do I do with it? Its a little overbore for the feral house cats and to small for the Armadillos  ;D  Does this acquisition make me a legitimate  Handiholic ?

I find it's best suited to the rhinos that keep invading my place.  Have yet to have one rhino that didn't drop on the first shot.  It will also drop a rabbit right quick, but there's not much left to eat.  Deer usually just die of a coronary before you pull the trigger, saving meat.  Mine get shot more than any other.

Ben

What plate of steel?  I don't see a plate of steel.  Where's the plate of steel?

Geroge, I'm proud of you.  I hate to say this, but I was worrying about you.  Thinking perhaps you were a little strange ::) ::)

Good luck.  Enjoy it. ;D ;D

George,

You done good!  Now convert your first 45-70 to a smokeless muzzleloader so you have a good reason to buy a second one. ;D

Load powderpuff round ball loads for playin' close with the kids and any level up from there, in projectile weight and charge, within reason. Whats not to love?

The .45-70 is an excellent deer and woods rifle.  It's not really any different than the .30-30 or .35 Remingtion in it uses.

no such thing as over bore ;D . load it down for the cats and go up. you can load 405/500 grain bullets at black powder speed and kill anything  in north America. without getting to bad

CONGRATULATIONS you're a Handi-holic.  The acquisition of the plain jane 45-70 puts you over the top.  Now cats are tricky to lead with heavier bullets, and just a might tough for the lighter boolits, so you'll just have to experiment some.  As for the possum on the half shell, well that armor just needs to be whacked with the 405 grainers runnin' 'bout 1,800 fps  :o :o :o  might wanna keep the hose handy, gets a tad messy  ;)

Have fun with it, load her hot and she'll stand straight up and talk at ya, keep it mild and your shoulder will wonder how long you'll be shootin' those .22's

When you compare, a .45 muzzleloader is a 'medium' bore squirrel gun, so a light bullet low powder load in a 45-70 is equivalent.  Maybe a 250gr lead pistol bullet.?

IIRC, the conical for the Ruger Old Army revolver casts about .457, the typical Italian C&B clones go .451-.454, and the 45Colt and ACP dont even get close to .457.
