Ruger 10/22's will they handle hyper vel ammo????
« on: March 01, 2012, 12:29:36 PM »
:)  Lately, the 10/22 has been appealing to me...most of my .22's are bolt action...the idea of a short semi auto .22 is something we have never owned...before retirement, I bought a bunch of .22 ammo...CCI MINI MAG, STINGERS, and YELLOJACKETS...also have a bit less than a case of WalMart FEDERAL hollow point long rifle...it seems to me I read once long ago that the little 10-22 wouldn't stand up to continued firing of even the CCI stuff..hispeed long rifle was about it...did I just dream this, was it true, and if so, do the new 10's shoot the hot stuff ok????

My stock 10/22 carbine cycles perfectly and shoots accurately with CCI Velocitors; 40 gr, 1435 fps.
No problems except they are kind of expensive.
Maybe what you read was that the Ruger manual says don't use Stingers in a target barrel.
Look at page 14:

The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Bought my Ruger 10/22 new, during the late 70's, and it's had literally every brand and category of 22 rimfire ammunition shot through it.
I've even used CB caps, 22 shorts, and shot capsules as well; (for chipmunks, rats, pests), though, anything other than 22LR must be loaded singly into the chamber.

Still shoots like a new gun on the 50 yard target range, and it especially likes Remington Yellow Jackets, and CCI Stingers.
I sold My 22LR mdl 25 Marlin bolt gun, right after buying the Ruger 10/22, 'cause it did everything the bolt gun did, and significantly better!
(Still own My Marlin 782 22WMRF bolt gun, so Yes, I do like Marlin RF Firearms)  ;)
It is.....what it is...

Somewhere I saw a recoil buffer that can be installed behind the bolt in the receiver, if you are concerned about hypervelocity ammo.  That might help.  I had mine zeroed for Stingers, and shot some cb longs to see what the would do.  They shot about 6" below the stingers at about 25 yards.  They would only be for a close range pest.  They were as quiet as my pellet gun though.

One of my 10/22's is over 30 years old and has shot MANY Yellow Jackets among other brands with no problems. Neither of my 10/22's are accurate with Stingers.

I have had at least 3-4 pf them, never a lick of a problem I could associate with hyper vel ammo...

One I shoot allot on a diet of nearly 100% Stingers....

With 18 10/22's here currently, I've about tried it all with them.   That includes the hypervelocity stuff.  Got a 10/22T when they first shipped and used Stingers in it without any issues at all.  Yellow Jackets never impressed me, nor has any Remington ammo really.    In more recent years I've come to understand that they're not really necessary.  Place your shot correctly and you can get the same result of the critter with standard velocity ammo but without the destruction.
The issue with the Stingers is the case length nit the oomph.  The buffer is more of a feel good thing more than anything.  If there really was an issue, would Ruger have taken care of that after the 1 million + 10/22 made? ;)
