Bullet trap
« on: February 02, 2004, 01:38:52 PM »
Have any of you ever tried to build a bullet trap? I just sent about 15 lbs of good alloy downrange and would be more than willing to try to build something that would catch the bullets after they make that little hole in the target. I have a range behind the house where a huge percent of all my shooting is done so I could put one in place and never move it. I have a torch, welder and acess to allmost any type of steel you could imagine. Thanks, Jim W.

:D   Hopefully I can help you  I have used, but not built bullet traps myself  I guess my experiance is in the LEO type that I used for some 20 yrs on an indoor range where the training was done at  When the indoor range was put in,I got the oppurtunity to watch the backstops being built  I do not know what you are shooting, but good steel plate will be your answer  Thickness should be about 3/8 or better depending on what it is at hand  If you form a box(square) front, with a sloping rear where the projectile impacts this will direct it in a downward angle  Ours had a little less that a 40 degree if I remember correctly  A projectile comming in at a horazontal angle, will, upon hitting the angled backstop,be directed dorectly down or will follow the angle of the steel  This will depend on what it is that you are shooting( lead vs jacket ammo)  If you have a box, under this angle made out of steel this is where your projos will collect  I am sure that if you look a little further into this you will get more, and probably better info  I do know that these work, and wont break your wallet  Size is the determining factor here.Stay safe...King

I built a steel trap out of a piece of 30" oil field pipe about 30" long.  I cut it in half lengthwise then set it facing upward, like a water trough.  I then welded a piece of 3/8 deck plate to one edge with it angled in at a 45 then put a lip on the edge to leave a "mouth" facing the shooter.  I also closed in the ends of the pipe with some 1/4 plate and welded a piece of angle on the front edge of the opening to form an interior lip.

When a target is hung across the face, the bullet hits the deck plate and angles down, hitting the pipe and bounces around in sort of a half circle.  Usually the lip catches everything but occasionally, there will be small holes in the targets from fragments.  We have shot at this at 25 yds and nothing has come back at us.  The bullets are pulverized and only lead dust and pieces of jacket remain.  However, a buddy of mine shoot a 300 Win Mag and he has punched through the deck plate several times so I would use 1/2 or 3/4 if I built it again.  I put pipe legs on it so the thing stands about bench rest height.   It's quite heavy so we move it around the field with a tractor.

I now also have a permanent bullet dump made from railroad ties and dirt.  We stacked the logs in a shallow V and dumped dirt in the opening.  So far, this has stopped everything shot but of course, I have to dig the bullets out of the dirt.  Good luck with whatever you do but make it plenty heavy if using big cartridges.

I build one simular to HWooldridge.I used a 10"diameter 4' long scedule 40 pipe and cut a 2 1/2" slit in it and welded the 1" plate back stop to the back edge of the slit, and the piece I cut out on a 22 1/2 deb angle facing in on the leading edge so when the lead followes the back plate down into the pipe and it stayes in the pipe.weldet a door on each end to clean it out and reuse the alloy. This is just the thing for offhand chicken practice.

I build a smaller one that is 2'x2' tapert to 3" like a funnel welded 4- 3" quarter bendes( elbowes)so they make a circle with a offset, welded a ecentrick 6x4 reducer to a 6"x3' pipe with a lid on the bottom so I can clean out the lead.that is a good one I really like that for pistol and it will handle the .45-3-1/4 rifle also.
