Talk about an unusual chambering!

In all my [shooting/hunting] travels I might have heard of ONE individual owning such a gun.  A buddy of mine knew another hunter who had an improved Whelen boltgun, but Wade didn't know if it was an A.I. or a Brown-Whelen!

But if you went forward with this idea, sure you want to shell out $200-$300 for dies in a singleshot?  Should figure at least $150-$200 minimum.

Why not instead look at the company that designed the .338 Hawk? (out of Wyoming).  Don't recall their corporate name, but if they designed a .35-cal built on a .30/06 case, I'd be curious what their's looks like before I settled on what the finished round and rechambered barrel is supposed to lok like.

I have a 35 Whelen Improved Handi which has slightly more case capacity than an Ackley, but less than a B/W, B/W dies can be had from CH4D for $162 $83.01, Fred has the reamer, the B/W die cost was the only hold up when I had mine done, I had to buy a 40º Imp FL die and just use a standard Whelen seating die which I already had, so die cost was minimal, it pushes a 250gr Hornady 2660fps from the 22" barrel.

I looked VERY hard at it back in '87 when I built my Whelen... I decided to try the longer barrel and see what I got...

I very much like the round and its performance. Its defineately a good one. A simply AI with a slightly longer barrel will easily achieve the ballistics at a cheaper cost.

BTW, with my rifles 35 Whelen chamber and barrel length, I am getting right at 3000fps from a 200G Hornady and almost 2600fps from a 250 Speer.

CW's right on the longer barrel, I get just shy of 2900fps(2895fps to be exact! ;D) with RL15 and the 225gr TSX in my 26" RMEF Ultra, essentially identical to 35 B/W ballistics,  but I don't care to pack the extra weight of the 26" barrel and lam stock set, it's just not as "Handi", so the 22" 35W Imp Handi in syn stock got the nod last elk season.  8)
