New Long Bow
« on: August 02, 2012, 12:07:44 PM »
It's  for backyard shooting fun, not hunting, but recently picked up a 70" English long bow, linen-backed red oak, traditional round-bellied type, no arrow rest.  What a blast!  Haven't shot a bow in years, but am starting to hit where I aim.  It only has a 30 lb. at 28" draw, which suits my messed-up right shoulder just fine, but I now have to get some proper trad. wood arrows spined for that weight.

Should've done this ages ago...!

Hey Bcarp! Good for you! I know of Philip the owner of woodbows. Great man to deal with! I give him all the credit for helping me with my own bow building. Philip answered alot of qestions for me. I've bought a bunch of his New England red oak staves, He knows his stuff when it gets to these kind of bows! This is my recent bow build from one of his staves. scout4

Scout, that's a beauty!  Love the darker finish.

What's the history behind the linen backing on these bows?

The linen is for extra strength and to support a oak board that does not have perfect grain lines for a longbow. Philip is a good bowyer and tries his best to get quality wood for his bows and so for him its more about the extra strength factor. But it is and always will be a 2 way system for any backing thats used for bows made like these. I have made several longbows and never used any backing. That is because the grain lines ran straight and did not run up off the board. I still have the first bow I made and it shoots fine, and has no backing. I bought that oak board from a cabinet maker after telling him what I needed and what I was going to do with the wood. Linen is only one of many such backing material that can be used, there are lots of others. scout4

Thanks!  I understand the use of a backing on longbows (Philip's bamboo-backed ones look very cool), and that it sort of replicates the two layers of heartwood and sapwood in the old yew bows.  How far back does the use of linen as a backing date?  Was it a medieval practice used on non-yew bows, perhaps?

I sure like the prices compared to other handmade bows out there.
