Thinking (strongly) of buying a Handi 30/30
« on: April 29, 2012, 01:39:35 AM »
I thinking about getting a Handi 30/30.  However, before doing it, I thought I would see what kind of experiences you guys have had who already have one.

Thanks.

One of the better barrels I have bought.  Never heard of any problems with this chambering at all.

The 30-30 has a reputation of being one of the best Handi chamberings. I have one that shoots great, but I am gong to ream it to 30-30 AI one of these days. I have a set of Hornady 30-30 AI dies coming in the mail right now. Get one, you can use it for deer sized game out to 200 yards and could be used for moose or elk if you you get close enough and place your shot well.

What's wrong with the way the stocks fit? Lots of guys use scopes with the low comb stocks with no problems at all.

+1 one, lots of members prefer a low comb stock for their scoped Handis, they just fit them better, lik2hunt was one that I specifically remember being very adamant that he preferred them. I have no problems using the BC or TDC stock with scopes, but I prefer low mounted scopes too, never the ridiculously high mounted scopes I see here way too often, those fellas need a monte carlo stock, that's for sure!  :P

I thinking about getting a Handi 30/30....................
Thanks.

That's my whole problem.  I don't THINK about it.  I see it and I buy it.  It's a knee jerk reaction.  I suppose that's why I have had five .357s, five 7mm-08s and two .22-250s all Handis.  It's like climbing Mt. Everest.....because it's there.

My tirty tirtys are kinda neglected.  The red-headed step children.  They're great shooting rifles, and I love them.  I suppose they don't get their share of use because I grew up with that caliber and it's old hat.  I'm all pumped up with new to me calibers and things I've never tried.  I haven't shot a deer with a .30-30 in over a decade, almost 2 in fact..  Too many new things to try.  I suppose this Fall I should take them out of hibernation and give them a day or two in the field.

Sorry for the rambling.  If you get the .30-30 Handi, I think you'll enjoy it.  Good luck,

Pete

I've had a few 30-30 Handi's and they've all been great shooters. My next one is gonna be a 30-40 Krag though. The Krag (IMO) would be just about perfect in a Handi.

Welcome!  30-30 is a pretty standard favorite from the readings here. I love mine.

DH that's the same problem i had,i have 2 and they both shot really good with the first load through them, almost boringly accurate.i attempted to squeeze more out by switching to 125gr nos bt,first loading is less than an inch at 150yds so I'm not even gonna mess with it anymore.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.
