I Finished 2 Knives
« on: March 27, 2012, 04:39:05 PM »
The first blade is one I reshaped from a large Imperial.
The second blade is from Jantz I reshaped and built it for my solider who is also my nephew.
I gave it to him last Sunday when He returned from Afghanistan.
Both handle are mesquite with whitetail antler from deer that I shot.
The file work is all free hand and the polishing on the blades was done with lighter and lighter grit sand paper and WD40.
(I don't have a buffing wheel)
These are the first 2 knives I have ever done and I know there are some on here that build some sweet blades so feel free to critique.

Those are some really nice looking traditional carry knives, Hooker.  Great job with the fit and finish and I'm sure you're nephew(glad he made it home) will get a lot of use out of his.
One quick tip to make you're life easier if you decide to do others.  I hand sand my own blades and have found that up to 600 grit, plain old Windex does a great job in helping polish.  A lot of knifemakers use it.  Above 600 I use a thread cutting oil, and it does a good job of giving a really smooth finish.  Always nice to see someone putting their skill and time
to good use.
