I have traded for a rem. 700 with bad barrel . Its in 270 win., want something a little diffrent and I do reload .Any ideas on what i can rebarrel to and use this bolt and action

In normally priced barrels, ie. $150 there is a .338 Ultra Mag available, otherwise there is a 270 WSSM or .375 H&H in the more expensive shilen barrels at midway.

how about a 6.5-06 or a 35 Whelen, 240 weatherby?

It is a little difficult to help you since we don't know what you intend to hunt or shoot.

If heavier game, go with the .35 Whelen.

If lighter game, go with the 6.5 Swede.

Both are different enough to be interesting, can be greatly improved with handloads, and are common enough calibers that you won't end up with an odd ball rifle that you can't readily sell or trade.

If you want to stay in the mainstream, then consider the .25-06, a vastly underrated cartridge.

Or, if you want a very interesting Classic cartridge, go with a .300 H&H Magnum. I believe it will fit in a standard length action, and has a lot going for it.

Unless you intend to alter the bolt face and extractor, or replace the bolt, you will have to rebarrel with a caliber that has the same case head dimensions as the 270 Win and this will exclude the magnums. There are lots of calibers with same case head dimensions and you can find cartridge case head specs in your loading manuals.

If you like the 7mm caliber the .280 Rem or .280 Ackley Improved would be a good choice. Without more info on your intended use it is hard to advise on specific calibers.

Do not know how you decided the existing barrel is bad but an hour or so of thorough and proper cleaning might surprise you as to the actual condition of the bore.

Thanks for the replies. I was interested in what calibers i could re-barrel to with a 270,30/06 size bolt face. mannyrock mentioned the 35 whelen , and that's the first cartridge i thought of . I have a 7600in 358win. and have sort of been looking for one in the whelen. To be honest, eastern whitetails are about all it would probally be used on. The barrel on the rifle now has a bad pit or hole of some kind about 1/2 inch in to the chamber,its so bad the case expands into the hole and has to be driven out.

With the new info you have provided, I would definitely take a hard look at the .25-06. For your intended use, it would be a great round. And really, in the places you hunt, what is a .35 Whelen going to do for you that your .358 won't already do? It will just add recoil and muzzle blast, to add a little extra energy that you will never ever use. The .25-06 is a very versatile round and a proven deer slayer out to 300 yards.

Hard to beat the 270 or 280 for whitetails and with proper loads things a lot bigger. My Handi Rifle in the 35 Whelen is bad news on deer and hogs too.

Thanks for all the ideas. The whelen was the first cartridge that came to mind , but now I"ll have to say i am leaning to something more like 280 AI or a 6.5/284

The.270 IMHO is no slouch - I'd just shop around gunsmiths for a good take-off (inexpensive) issue .270 barrel that was replaced during someone else's project.

If you'd like a hot rod , I have a .243 Super Rock Chucker barrel for a 700 and the dies to go with it . 4,000 FPS with a 75 Gr. bullet . You can make brass from 25-06 ,.270 or 30-06 !

oops. i reread and saw eastern whitetails....270,30-06, or 35 whelen and your needs will be more than fulfilled!!!! good luck. no need for anything more..and the 35 whelen will even do you justice if you ever get to the great white north!anything in north america with a well place shot!

Strange timing on this subject because I went though a similar thought process last night at bedtime. My deer rifles run from 243, 25-06, 270, 7-30, 7mm-08, 280, 280Ack, 7mm mag, 30-06, 308, and 300 WSM. I was getting the itch for another rifle when I realized my plain vanilla 270 ADL is a sweet shooting rifle, easy to load for, and does everything I want from any of the other rifles. Additionally, it has a zero collectors value so i do not have to be so particular with it in the truck or field. It's just a gun, not a show piece. The scope is worth more than the rifle, yet it is a proven workhorse.

Wouldn't be any fun to downsize to the 270 only but certainly it would do all I ever need on North America.
