35 Remington?
« on: April 16, 2012, 03:40:40 PM »

I do not own, yet,  a 35 Whelen handi but I will. In the meantime, I am eyeing up a 1965 Marlin 336 RC in 35 Rem. I have a 30-30 Texan and love the rifle. The 35 rem I'm oggling is in great shape but unfortunately not a straight stock.

I notice that 35 rem gets short shrift here with much teeming to .356 right off the bat. So, is this typical handiitis - ie go bigger because we can, or is there something anemic about 35 Remington?

Nothing anemic from me, I just had the 358/356 dies before I had the barrel.  I debated for awhile, cause the 35 rem is a good ole round.

I too have a .30-30 336 Texan.  It was my first "deer" rifle as a kid and I love it also.  She's a sweet old girl, and together we've taken a lot of deer and had some memorable times.  I was hunting with a friend in Maine in 1960 when he took a large doe with a .35 336.  I was totally impressed.  It's not a wimp.

I was looking for a .35 Rem. barrel when that cursed Dinny brought up the .356 subject.  I looked at the stats and was impressed.  That was before I realized it would shoot .358s too.  Now, I do as a fellow from another forum does.  I load the .356's down to factory .35 Rem levels and the .358 very close to the .35 Whelen.  It's a lot more versatile than the .35 Rem., and eliminates the "need" for the .35 Whelen.  It's also very flat shooting with a 200 gr. bullet at 2550 fps. compared to a .35 Rem.

I guess it all comes down to the same thing:  Why do folks do AIs in a bunch of calibers?

Good morning,

Reaming a 35 Rem to 356 is exactly what I did. I also never even shot the brand new barrel in its factory caliber.  BUT it had nothing to do with the merits of the 35Rem, it was simply  (IMHO) the best option for a hand reaming to the 356 Win.

In my case, the 356 is a better cartridage than the 35 Rem for a number of reasons. Loaded to modern pressures, it will beat the 35 Rem by over 400 fps with same weight bullets. Second, it has a better case with larger shoulder and a .500+ rim.

Another "BUT", I also own at least a half dozen other 35 rem firearms that will never be altered by yours truly! I am completely satisfied with what they are able to do for me.

The "problem" with the 35 Rem is basically two fold. First it is known for "soft" Remington brass and a small shoulder. These two things together can cause FTF's in actions like our Handis. In a Marlin lever for example, the case head is held against the bolt face. This is an advantage to the FP strike. It reduces the chance for the pin to push the case forward. This happens because the Brass is soft enough to actually cushion the blow. Combine this with the small shoulder it head spaces off of.

The 35 Rem is a classic caliber that has lasted to tests of time and is still going. Its a good one, but like most things that have been along so long. What it can do and what it "should" are well out lined.

I say buy one if you can find it, IF you have issue with FTF try different brand ammo than Remington. OR load you own with at least once fired Remington brass and I bet you will be just fine. NOT all barrels have a problem. I don't mean to "blanket" all barrels so chambered. IF you do have issues, you will be "armed" on how to cure it.

In my limited experience with the .35 Remington, I only own five rifles chambered to it and have killed only a short bed pickup full of
Whitetails, there is absolutely nothing anemic about it!!!!  It is a handloaders delight when chambered in a strong action like the Remington 760 or 7600 actions.  I run handloads out of my 7600 right on the heals of my .358 Win chambered rifles.  Even when loaded
in a 336 Marlin there is nothing shy about the .35 Remington.  All my kills with the .35 Remington have been one shot affairs.

I agree, NOTHING anemic about the tried and true .35 Remington. I have killed more deer with my Remington 336 in .35 Remington than with all other rifles and shotguns combined. What has always been said about the .35 Remington is it kills a lot better than it's paper ballistocs would have you believe. In my mind it is the best whitetail deer and black bear round out there. All except one of my deer have been one shot kills with my .35 Remington as well, and that one was my fault, I pauched (gut shot) it. That deer, my biggest, a 201 point eight point was a story onto itself, and the story of that deer still gets brought up at that camp every year. It involved a 2-3 hour track through a swamp in blizzard, a tipped over canoe which at the time contained 2 hunters and the deer, and a swim in a cold November river...it was in a word, memorable.
There is a lot of talk here about reaming out that fine old cartridge to newer cartridges but I will keep mine as it is because .35's works GREAT, they always have and they always will. they will still be here when the guns that have been rechambered to these new flash in the pan rounds will be sitting on the racks at gun stores and customers will be saying to themselves "what were they thinking when they did that to that fine old rifle"....<><.... :)

 So, is this typical handiitis....

To answer your question.

YES!  ;D ;D ;D

I stumbled across a really old brand new in the box 336 in 35 Rem here in central Okla.
Kind of unusual as most around here prefer the 30-30.
I absolutely love that gun and caliber.
I picked up a Handi barrel in 35 Rem about a year ago and my current plans are to leave it there.  ;)

It should, but never does. Cease to amaze me. The knowledge that the folks on this board have. How we can have this kind of intellectual resource and yet be building everything we can in China is beyond me.

Well, you have put my apparently unfounded concerns to rest and, provided I can get it for the right price, I think I will make it mine. .I'm not a fan of a pistol grip lever gun and I'd like to hold out for an elusive "Texan" in 35 rem. Indeed, I would love a "Marauder", but seeing as their asking price is now well north of $800, that seems unlikely.

The 356 is a 24xx FPS round, and the 35 R is a 23XX FPS round shooting a 200 grain lead bullet.  Those are the practical limits for these rounds (and you can push them both faster but you really do not need to).  40 grains (compressed) of H4895 will get you around 2100 FPS in the 35 and that gets about as much as you can expect from a mid range deer round.  41.5 grains IMR 3031 (compressed) in the 356 will get you around 2200 FPS and that is a great deer load.

The 356 has better brass, has a rim (I like to shoot reduced loads), and has a little more available gasoline if you need it.

In the past year I have been downsizing and moving from a collector to a 'shooter'.  I traded off my 35R and kept the 356 Marlin.  BUT, I also traded off the 338 Marlin, and that one is much better than either of these by a long shot.  (Let me explain why I did not keep it over the 356.  The 338 is really a 30-06 in a lever.  For long range shooting I prefer a bolt action platform.)

I just like the 356.  It can do with a 200 grain bullet what a 30-30 can do with a 150 grain bullet.  And I still have 2 30-30's but their time is limited I think.  One is probably going to be a 375 Win before too long 8).

What's the availability of 356 brass like as well as RN .358 bullets (for leverguns). I ask because if I recall correctly, JES does a Marlin 336 30-30 to 356 and I believe they are highly thought of. That's one way to get a 35 caliber Texan....

The brass is a yearly run from W-W.  It is good brass IMO.  Get a few hundred and that should last most shooters a fairly long time.  I have 100 or so in circulation with 400 in reserves just in case.  That will last a long time for me.  I am not familiar with factory jacks anymore, but presume they would be easy to come by.  The Hornday 200 gr. Inerlocks and Sierra 200 gr. Hunter are the standards, and I believe big green still makes the Corelokt 200 gr..

As a caster I am fond of RCBS 35-200, and it is a good bullet for range and game.  I also have Ranch Dogs 35-190 and like it as well.  I have used Lyman 358315 and 358318 and both of them suck eggs for me in anything I used them in.

You could rework a Marlin 35R into a 356, or like you say have JES make you one out of a 30-30.  They will both be about the same price, but with the rebore you can choose your rate of twist...if you want to shoot something a shade heavier for instance.

Then of course there is the 375 Win and then you can compare it with the two 35's and you have a head scratcher.  The 356 is going to have a flatter trajectory of the 3, the 35 will kick less and be easier to find fodder for, and the 375 will pretty much do what a 35R will do with a 200 and do it with a 240 gr. with less pressure and you get to keep your rim, and 375 brass is very durable IME.

I waited a year for one like that from Nonneman.  The work was $300 shipped both ways (and it was good).  Do the math for an SC and a hundred empties.  That is a good deal.  No waiting either.

The .35 rem is great!  It just plain 'thumps' what you hit with it!  I found an old 336 with no finish left at Jay's a few years ago.  The price was right so I took it home.  Then I sent it down to Ken Kelly at Mag-na-port and turned him loose.  He cut the 24 inch barrel to 18" and ported it.  Finished it with a satin black finish and a scout scope base, big appature peep at the rear and a Williams firesight on the front.  It is one great woods rifle!  And it is very 'soft' shooting also.  Love it!  Get that .35 and never look back.  A Handi in .35 is on my short list also.  It's a caliber that will bring a smile to your face every time you take it out.  44 Man

All this praise for the 35Rem is killing me.  I just picked up an unfired 35R Handi barrel last week, it locked up w/o mods to the only free SB2 I had and it came with 200 rounds of 1x brass.  I have 21 rounds of Indiana Deer Legal (brass cut to 1.8") 35 Super Rem loaded up with 200 grain Hornday SPs over RL7 and i HAVE TO WAIT TO MONDAY TO GO TO THE RANGE. :o >:( :(   In case no one noticed, I have NO patience.  I do however hope this is a case of good things coming to those who wait. ;D

I really enjoy my 35 Remington Handi. Family has a few. I load mine to +p pressure using RL 7 and Hornady 200 grain FTX bullets. Shoots fine. I wish Barnes made a 180 grain flat point TSX bullet for the 35 Rem like the 150 grain FP TSX they make for the 30-30. That bullet never fails to expand at any velocity, maintains most of its total weight, and penetrates like a typical Barnes all copper bullet.

I bought the 35 Rem Handi barrel because I wanted to load and shoot the 35 Remington cartridge. The 25 Rem, 30 Rem, and 32 Rem all died off, but the 35 Rem lives on. There must be a reason for that. To me, the 35R has history, class, and nostalgia. I have wanted one since the Dark Ages, when I first heard of it because T/C was chambering the Contender for it. I was intrigued, I studied up on the round, and I liked what I read. Loading and shooting it is as much fun as I had hoped; the 200gr FTX makes it a bit of a thumper, while the 180 SSP is faster and more accurate. A 160 gr cast round nose bullet makes a great accurate and cheap little plinker. My 1894 and 1895 Marlins are beautiful guns, but, sorry, the 336 looks like Weatherby went cowboy or something. Until I found the Handi barrel, the 336 was the only readily available gun in 35R, but it was too ugly to buy.
I have never considered changing it to anything else, just so it's bigger and faster. I have enough bigger and faster guns. I just wanted a 35 Remington.

In the end it is a personal preference thing.  35 Rem , 356 and 358 Win are all great rounds and will do well on any game in N. America with a well placed shot. Those really big bears even though it will work you may want to pack a little heave round. So I would say buy what you want and that way you are most apt to be happy. Between all three there is only a few hundred fps. difference.

My last whitetail with the 336 in 35 Rem was a one shot kill at 218 yds. per the rangefinder.  Used the Hornady Leverevolution bullets.  IMO the 35 was always a decent short range gun, but really came into its own for deer sized game with the LE bullets.  Hunters either love them or hate them.  I find them very accurate and very effective.   The 35 Rem is a very effective medium range caliber for deer sized game with the right ammo.
