Bottom of dovetail to center of globe..... or top of the blade if there's no globe.  ;)

Ive got a list of the Lyman 17A heights available, and they used to list them all in the Buffalo Arms catalog to help you see if you got the next taller than you had.

Who needs a list when the internet is at your fingertips, ya only got three choices from Lyman, .404", 494" and 584". Lots of other options from other mfrs tho, BA has those listed as well.  ;D If'n I was in the market for a new front sight for one of my BCs or Targets, I'd get one with a spirit level and maybe even make it windage adjustable, the Pedersoli USA426 for instance.  ;)

FWIW, and IMHO, a spirit level has some value in target shooting, especially at long range, but you need to be well stabilized to keep the bubble from rocking side to side, and if Im watching a bubble Im not watching the wind flags, mirage, target or sights.
They do look 'purposeful' though.
IIRC, my list has four 17A sizes, maybe they are not all available now.

Yup, Lyman lists four, but if'n ya read the Lyman link I posted , the fourth is for a european dovetail(.360") which the BC doesn't have, at least none of mine do.

Dunno, but when you find the place that little things disappear to, let me know what to look for cuz I swear somethings just disappear like they were transported into a parallel universe or something!!  ???

On your keyboard, look for a little spec of junk between the A key and the caps lock key that's got em stuck together, have had it happen on other keys, you can pull the key caps up using a couple bent paper clips, put a little 90º bend in the very end to form a little hook to lift on opposite sides of the key cap.

Tim,

Too late, I done cutoff the left side of the keyboard and made a shorty! ::)   My cap lock & "A" were not stuck, I copied a capital "A" and was pasting it into my posts.  My "A" key failed because somebody let some of Richard's shim stock lubricant drip on the keyboard last night. :o    The bad key gave me an excuse to buy a wireless mouse & keyboard, so all is good.

My Lyman globe is .585", so I think I will use my 45-120 for 3-gun shoots since most the targets are well inside 50 yards. ;D

I cant tell exactly where that battery went, but dollars to donuts you will find it in the last place you look.......... ;)
If you are reluctant to mount that sight just to see where the bullets will go, make a wood block you can tape on and a finishing nail post to the same height ABOVE the barrel (not inc. dovetail base,  so subtract the depth of the barrel cut from your overall height). OR, if you are feeling like more work, make a brass dovetail to fit your barrel and drill for a finishing nail you can SuperGlue in at the OAH you figure the new one is. Oh, I suppose you could even use a piece of hardwood for it, too, if you dont have to beat it in too hArd.......Dang, there goes my A........!

I hope the lubricant was of good quality, and not the cheap stuff. ;D ;D ;D

I compared the .584 lyman front globe sight againist the Williams Firesight on my 22" 45-70 and it is the same exact height.  It is also the same height above the top of the muzzle, not centerline of the bore, as the iron sight on my wife's SL 243.  I guess Illion got a deal on these height front sights? ::)   I am going to drive out the slot blank on the 45-120 and give the 17A a go. I am thinking I should be go on the 100 and maybe 200 yard range.  Also, going to see if I can run down a longer range peep sighted rifle and give that a go, see if my eyes are up to this type of shooting.

I like the idea of the wood block and finish nail taped to the barrel. That would make it look very "Rustic" and Bubbafied ;D

An all black Bubba Tactical 45-120? ???   One advantage of this type of "tactical" weapon is the odds of me leaving the magazines at home is much lower. ::)
