356 Range Report
« on: April 20, 2012, 04:33:51 PM »
All I can say is this is about the best shooting handi out of the box that I have.  My 45/70 ultra giving it a run for it's money.  This is with only about 12 bullets down the tube!

It also shows that a careful hand reaming of a 35 Rem barrel can be done.

Loaded 4 different powder loads of H4895 over a 200 gr Hornady spire point.  Here's the best group of the day at 100yds.

There you go, Bobby! Keep up the load development and I bet you can get them all touching.

Nice shooting Bobby!  Here's three out of my .356.  Same bullet, same powder, almost the same load.  If the shooter was any good, it would have put three in the same hole.  Gotta love them ;D    The best way for me to tighten up my groups is to let my wife do it ::)

What velocities are you guys getting?
Also, are you able to use 358Wins in your chambers since I believe the only difference is that the 356 has a rim?
What was the parent barrel? 357mag or 35 Rem?
Mine is going out next week to Wayne York.
This will become my wife's deer gun.
Good stuff, keep up the info.

Well done Bobby! ;D
How did you find the recoil compared to the other Handi's you have?

BB,

Jesus did say the last shall be first and the first last ;)   So I guess this preacher was just following His teaching, "putin the bullet under the powder"!  Aint that somethin. :o

I didn't chrony them yet.
Yes, you can shoot 358 in it.
Parent barrel was a 35 Rem

Jeepman,
The recoil was more than my 308, but way less than my hunting 45/70 loads.  I have my old pallet wood stocks with a good recoil pad on it, which allowed me to put a 1lb mercury recoil supressor in it.  Tamed it down like a pussy cat.

Klahtax, mine was a .357 mag.  I'm running the Hornady 200 gr. .358 dia. in .356 just about dead on 2450 fps. over (or under? ??? ) H4895.  Richard Lee says the 180 gr. Hornady SSPs will do 2600 over H4198.  I have the bullets, but have not tried the load yet.

I've only shot factory .358s, but I have loads that can supposedly take the same 180 gr. bullet close to the 3000 mark.  I'll know more this week when I load, shoot and chrony some.

For great accuracy and speed, work up to 44.0gr of H322 with the 200gr Hornady FTX bullet!

Good to hear Bob!!  Looks like you have a shooter!!!

Mine is too!  I haven't really worked up any loads, but the two I have tried so far have both produced small groups!

I have shot the 220 FP and the 200RN.

Just a word on the SSP.. Just remember what it stands for...  Single Shot PISTOL BULLET. Its designed to preform at LOWER vels as a result of short barrels of rifle calibers fired from pistols... Our handis can easilly get these 35 cal light weights moving along at quite respectable velocities. Velocities BEYOND what they are designed to work under. If you feel the need for a 180G bullet, look at the Speer 180FP bullet...

You guys should give AA2520 a try. In my .358 JDJ which has only a wee bit more capacity I was able to get 2300 fps from a 14" rechambered .35 Remington barrel at one grain less than JD's max listed load from the data SSK provides with barrels they do.

In the .358 JDJ there was nothing and I mean no powder tried that could even be called a close second for velocity or accuracy. Second best was IMR4320 but it was far enough behind it seemed like it should be called third.
