What ever happened to manual trannys?
« on: January 06, 2004, 07:49:12 AM »
I am in the market for a new truck. During my travels I have noticed that you can't find a manual trans. anywhere! Whats up with this! I know many people perfer the auto. I have an auto now. But I would like to go back to a manual. I live in a small town so starts and stops are no big deal. Most my driving is open road. I just wanted to see what everyone else thought about this. I think the main reason is the soccer mom and yuppies all want to own a truck that they have no need for. And an auto makes it more car like.

When I was younger, I did not mind shifting all the time, now that I am older I rather just put into gear and go. But if I had an older Hot Rod I would go with a manual trans.

I would much rather have a manual transmission when going downhill on steep logging roads, or on a 4x4 trail.  In fact there are places that I use to go with my old manual transmission 4x4 that I would not go with my newer one with an automatic.  I sure liked that old granny gear.

If you order a new truck, any flavor, you can get it with a manual. I will only have a manual in a truck myself...

Used to be a manual transmission was the only way to get more gears and the old autos were not very good at selecting the right gear.  Now with 4 and 5 speed autos, electronic shift, and the ability to change the tranny to towing mode the manuals are not need.  However, there are still a few instances where a manual is better or just preferred.  Unfortunately do to their lower demand you will most likely have to order one if that is what you want.

What size are you considering?  I know Ford and Chevy 3/4 ton trucks have them.

I know exactly what you mean.

I recently went through the same process, only I am poor and was only looking at used trucks.

Anyways, probably 95% of the pick-ups I looked at while doing research had autos, and I ended up buying a pick-up ( well ok, I am paying the bank for the "privelage" of driving it) with an auto.

The truck was a good deal and I didnt want to pass it up, oh well.
