375 H&H Accuracy
« on: January 27, 2004, 08:22:45 AM »
I just got my new 375 H&H in a Sako model 75 Hunter Deluxe. I topped it with a 1.5 x 6 x 42 Swarovski PH scope. My question is, what kind of accuracy should I expect? I haven't shot the gun enough to be concerned but the best I have been able to do is about 2 ½" 3-shot groups at 100 yards. This is with Remington 300 Gr. Swift A-Frame PSP. This is the only ammo I have tried through the gun. All of my other guns shoot at least 1 ½" groups at 100 yards and main my deer rifle shoots ½" 5-shot groups at 100 yards. I do not expect this kind of accuracy but I would like to see this gun do better than 2 ½" groups. Any imput will be welcome.

Big Game Hunter,

Try another load.  Both of my .375 H&H's shoot at or under an inch but that is using reloads.  I have never gotten good accuracy, under 1.5 inches, with Swift A-Frame's.  I am getting my best accuracy right now with 260 gr. Nosler Accubond's ahead of 80.2 grs. of H4350.  Remember to start under that load by 10% if you want to try it.  Keep trying the .375 H&H is very capable of better accuracy than what you are getting.  Lawdog

I've had excellent results with Hornady 300 gr. solids and soft points, Woodleigh 300 gr, weldcores and 270 gr. Barnes X Bullets.

Winchester brass, Federal 215 primers, near max loads of Varget, IMR4064 or RL15 should get you sub-MOA precision. Make sure you crimp the bullets.

BGH,

I fully agree with the suggestion to try other brands and types of ammo, your gun might not like Swifts. As far as your rifle is concerned the Sako 75's are known for their accuracy, as are all the .375H&H's I've ever tried. My old Browning Safari shoots Barnes X's into 1 1/8 and everything else under an inch. In fact Hornady 300gr RN crowd a 1/2". One suggestion is to rest the back of your hand on the frt bag and hold on to the forend, because the forend bouncing off the bag can mess up the grouping. It can also affect your zero between what you shoot from the bench and what you shoot from a field stance.

I don't have any idea what Factory loads to try as I only shoot reloads. I have heard good reports about the Hornady Heavy Mag loads, and the Federal prem stuff.

The guns likely fine it's just looking for the right diet is all.

Sorry guys, but my office has been having computer problems for the past few days now.

GB's posting of my links is right on target (no pun intended. )

300 grain Federal Hi-Shocks produced near one-hole shots - truly outstanding.

Please keep in mind that my .375 has had some custom work done to it.  However, you should get much better results than just 2.5" with your .375 from the Sako.

Try the Federal Hi-shocks and Nosler Partitions.

I agree totally, the 375 has always been a great shooter for me.  I shot a friends M70 with handloaded Barnes and 1/2 groups were the norm.  Actually more like slightly enlarged holes as the groups were nearing bullet size!!!!  I've not used factory ammo but handloads have always amazed me.  The acurracy was minute of PrairieDog.  In a rifle designed for really BIG varmits....
