Project under way: questions
« on: March 18, 2012, 04:25:58 PM »
Ok, I got that purdy rainbow stock off my 45-70.  No wonder the dang thing was so heavy.  The stock was full of lead shot.   I almost considered just cutting the barrel a tad...for half a second...then decided I'm all in on it.

Coupla questions.  First, where do I get the filler screws to replace the holes from the scope base?

Second, can I get the rear sight off, or is it welded on?  Does Williams make a replacement leaf, or should I just try a little day-glo paint?

Third, can I really chop this thing down and recrown myself, or should I just buck up the $125 and have a smith do it?

The rear sight is not welded on, and $125 for a cut and re-crown is about $75 too much.  Larry

txdg,

Go to the FAQ sticky thread and search for barrel cutting/recrowning.  Take your time and study the information provided and you will be able to do a serviceable cut & crown yourself.  Be forewarened that once you cut and crown one yourself it can become addictive and you might end up with a gun safe full of shortys. ;)   If you do your own chop job just be sure to leave the barrel long enough to be legal plus some incase you have an issue and need to re cut it later.

Holy crapoly guys. The FAQ is a goldmine.  Instead of spending the 125 at the smith, I'll be doing the cut and crown myself.  Will still have to have the front sight hole D/T, but that should only be $20.

Will definitely be providing updates as I go!

On the rear sight, do I just back out the adjustment screw and then push the pin holding the leaf in to get to the base screw? I want that thing off of there!

Also, just so I can play with it without having to get in the gunsmith's queue for such a simple job as tapping a new front sight mount hole, can I use the screw hole where the rear sight is to mount the front sight?  Or are they different sized screws?  It would make for a very short sight radius but this thing ain't going past 50yds anyway...and its gonna be ugly anyway.

Instructions for that H&R old style sight are in the FAQs in the sights section, but yes, the mounting screw is in the sight base, the roll pin has to be removed as well as the elevator screw.

I drilled and tapped my own barrel for a picatinney rail. Drill about half way, begin with a plug tap, then finish with a bottom tap. If you're not comfortable using taps (they can break) best to let a smith do it. If comfortable and experienced...do it youself. Or you can silver solder the sight(s) on with a low temp silver solder. After you cut the barrel off, use the cut off piece to test your abilities.
