New(to me) 357 mag
« on: March 20, 2012, 06:36:53 AM »
finally had some luck in looking for a 357 Handi.  I just picked up one with a cinnamon laminated stock with less than 20 rounds through it for $200.  I found this on the 24 hour campfire web site.  I don't know yet whether it is an SB1 or SB2 but it doesn't matter.  Now I need to get on the list to ream it to Max.  Also need suggestions on a scope to put on it, if anyone has  a recommendation.

I prefer a scout scope or a red dot to get it forward of the hammer.

In my opinion a M82 base, with PRW low rings, and Nikon Omega 1.65-5X mounted forward the hammer, is the perfect combo for pistol caliber Handys... And 30-30, 45/70 etc. :)

Nikon, Redfield, or Leupold 2-7x32/33 in medium Burris Zee rings is what I use on almost all of my Handis. :)

I tried a scout mount on my 357 Maxi, didin't like it, scout mounts aren't for everyone  as most will find out, it has a 4x Simmons shotgun scope on it now. A Weaver 82 or Ultra mount will allow a short scope to be mounted just  ahead of the hammer as Monteria mentioned, but I usually just bob the hammer and use low rings, works well if you choose a Handi-friendly scope that is either fixed power or has a small power ring/ocular bell that doesn't cause hammer interference. ;)

My shorty Maxi is wearing a 4x32 Bushnell Banner on Burris medium Zee rings.  I really like it and have the same combination on all my pistol caliber Handis and my  18 inch.38-55.  Like Tim, I tried the scout mount and didn't care for it at all.  I also tried red dots and took them off in favor of the Bushnell.  They weren't pinpoint enough for my liking.  I put a red dot on my 20 ga. Compact Pardner Pump, but don't know yet if I really like that or not.  You're going to enjoy your Handi Maxi.

I like the low powered scopes like Weaver K-2.5's, 1-3X20 or other straight tube scope.  They give more than enough power for the kind of shooting I do.  Mostly hunting and plinking, very little paper shooting.  DP

Great news and best of luck with the new to you 357!!!!!

Like many guys here, one is not enough... I also have two.;). One  currently wears a 2x7x32 VXII but has worn a cherished only M8 3X and 2.5x scope.  My other one was a test mule fore a Dednutz mount and Redfield 2x7 scope. I love the mounts durability and build quality... HATE that the lowest mount is taller than the tallest rings Avalible ....  I like the Redfield scope, still prefer my Leupolds hands down....

As long as you stay with a handi friendly scope lo or med mounts will work 99% of the time.
