Interesting Reel
« on: April 08, 2010, 11:58:31 AM »
I love old fishing gear.  I still bass fish with my grandfather's 1960's Ambassador 5000, but I really love old fly gear.  A guy stopped by my office a few minutes ago and said, "Hey, I know you like to fly fish, maybe you'd like these."  One was a Shakespear 8.5' 8wt rod and the other was a Wright & McGill Fre-line model 10-BC reel.  He thought it was an automatic, but obviously it isn't.  I had never seen one quite like this and was hoping someone out there could fill me in on the reel, it's history, and it's intended use.  I'm assuming that it can be used on a fly rod, but I'm not exactly sure how.  Any insight you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Sure like to see a picture of that reel.
BTW I not only still fish with a '60's Ambassador 5000, I also use a '50's Phleuger Supreme......unfortunately they weren't my Grandpappy's.....they were MINE!

I'll get a picture up tomorrow.  I've asked several more people about it and no one knew anything, so the search for info continues.

I'm pretty sure this is the same reel my uncle had when he used to take me fishing.  If I'm thinking about the right reel it is actually a closed faced spinning reel.

Yours sure looks to be in good shape

a Freeline reel is like a spinning reel to use on a flyrod.
It's mostly used for steelheading, which is like "trotting" in the UK - letting the current dead drift out long lengths of mono while you watch a quill bobber.
