Why is the "heaviest bullet that you can realistically use the 140 gr bullet?"

I am shooting 160 Sierra GameKing and 150 NBT with some very small groups.

Everybody has an opinion.

Do what works for you.  I shoot 140 in 7mm-08 but thats what I have on hand. I might pick up some  of those 160 sierra's and see how they do out of my rifle.

IMHO I think the 270 is way over rated as far as being the king of calibers.  I know it is a fine cartridge and has been acclaimed for many years as greased lightning.  But it just is not any better, shooting the same grain bullet, as some other calibers including the 30-06 and the 280.  Between the 270 and the 7m-08 compare same weight bullets and see if the difference appeals to you.   I think it all boils down, as usual, to what rifle/caliber combo you want and what you want it to do within your typical shooting distances.  Both calibers really top out, again my opinion, with the 150 gn bullet.  The ideal 270 bullet is the 130 and the 7m-08 goes with the 140.

:D I like your choice of the 270Win in the LSS. I have 2 rifles in 270 nad am in the process of adding number 3. It is a custom Rifle built around a 721 action. it has the sako extractor, timney trigger and after handling my new Rugerr 77 in a Bell and Carlson stock, it will be dropped into the tan stock. I'll top this rifle off with a Weaver Grand Slam in 4.5-14x40 scope and never look back. I have sold my 6.55, 25-06 and the 270's is my choice of caliber. the rest are great rounds I just find the 270 has all I need for now. I will add a 325WSM in the next year along with either a 223 or 22-250 and my battery will be complete. I want to hunt Caribou in the next couple of years and will carry any of the rifle mentioned in either 270 or 325WSM.

George,

Approx. 3 months ago, I began my quest to find the perfect medium-game cartridge - something to fill the "gap" between my .243 Win. and a future .30-06 a friend of mine is selling me next spring.

I started off asking the EXACT same question as yourself - whether .270 or 7mm-08 would be the better choice.  I also considered the .260 Remington at the time, and got a lot of interesting responses about the three cartridges.

At the end of all this, looking at the results of a survey I posted for 2 months, talking extensively with shooters at local gunstores, talking with my hunting friends, and examining various rifles, I decided what caliber I would buy for my perfect deer gun:

6.5x55 Swedish Mauser

Long reply to your post, but I wanted to give you a bit of background before suggesting the Swede.

Best wishes,
Bawko
