Maybe I'm just lucky, but in defense of the 870's I have two in my safe that have functioned perfectly since I bought them.  One, a 20 ga bought new, even went trap and skeet shooting with it, has never malfunctioned at all.  The other, a 12 that I bought a used action, and new barrel and stock set for, has only been fired a few hundred times, but has always fed and functioned without a complaint.  Both of these are the express models.  One thing I did to both was to disassemble the guns and apply lapping compound to all of the action surfaces, then re-assemble the guns, dry cycle them a few hundred times (wife got really tired of hearing a pump gun cycle  ::)  ) then disassemble again, clean out the action, lube it, and re-assemble the gun.  As long as the timing is good on these they can be made as good as the wingmasters were (at least functionally, they will never be as pretty)

Benelli Nova.  Now I got this gun the first year they came out so maybe they have gotten better as the years have gone by.  But this gun has cost me more ducks and geese than I care to remember, as well as a big tom.  I seem to short stroke the action, which produces an empty chamber (which of course ends up as a click and an oh $&!^) probably my fault as I grew up with an 870 and the extra 1/2" for the 3 1/2" action messes with me.  But it has an issue with the lug not locking and you have to slam it closed a couple times once in a while to get it shut. It has sit in my safe for the last few years as another Benelli took it's place (SBE II).  I should sell the darn thing but would hate to saddle someone else to it...

A Sabatti sbs, a cross-eyed pair of water barrels attached to a piece of a plank. It looked fancy at some distance, but was incredibly bad worked. I am still ashamed of having bought it. However, it was my first shotgun.

I've not personally had any issues with my 870's or single shots, but a couple years ago I rabbit hunted with a guy that had just bought a new Mossberg 500 in .410.  EVERY time that he pumped the action, a loaded shell would be fed into the chamber and the next loaded shell would dump out on the ground.  Don't know what he ever did with that gun, but it became a two-shot for the rest of the day after it done that three times in a row.

I've seen the old Mossberg Two-step more times than I can count.  I once saw a weld break and the whole barrel fell off one of those things... Scare the crap out of me.

I've never owned one, but a friend gave me a 1200 when I was in college to see if I could "fix" it.  I have always had a reputation as a winchester shotgun guy...  But that reputation stops chronologically at the Model 12...  Anyway, it wouldn't do anything right.  The chamber was too tight, the action was stiff and metallic.  It had a tendency to not release a shell from the magazine, which may have been related to the fact that shells tended to stick in the chamber.  There was absolutely nothing good about that thing, and I could never solve all the problems.  Cheaply made guns are cheaply made guns...  I told him to find a deep lake and give it a swim...

My first shotgun when I wuz about 15...       a used catalog brand bolt action 20 ga. with the twisty choke onna end of the barrel...my first shot was at a flushing quail..got the quail ;D , but the action slid backwards in the stock everytime it was fired :'( ...the stock was broken inside and didn't have a crossbolt..traded it back to the guy I got it from for a .22 marlin auto.. :)
