End of an era revisited
« on: February 08, 2012, 06:39:48 PM »
It's been over a year since I posted about this topic.   It took longer than I thought it would to wind down, but my last TC barrel shipped yesterday.

All the frames, all the furniture are also long gone as well as most of the tools and supplies dedicated to them.   So except for a few parts, tools, supplies, etc after almost 44 years I am completely out of the TC’s that had been a very important interest to me and served me very well for a little over two thirds of my life.   It was slow enough coming as it turned out that I don't feel completely naked standing in Times Square at least, I had so much it took about 5 years to find them all new homes.

Almost as much an enjoyable part of the TC experience as seriously using them for much of my shooting and hunting for about 4 decades has been the involvement with others who also found them to be a good choice for almost any usage.   There are a lot of very fine people stricken by TC’s out there.   I've been a soldier for TC all these years, trying to help others from my experiences with them, tried to keep the real facts about them out there despite the endless hearsay and speculations passed on about them in error.  Some found it helpful, some didn't, but that's just the normal flow of all things and so expected.   Anyway, there are many knowledgeable folks out there when it comes to TC’s that can carry on.   I've always said there is no such thing as a dumb question when asked with sincerity, and I still believe that.   But there are also lazy questions, and they have become more and more the norm on the Internet.   No question hasn't been asked AND answered before when it comes to TC’s, lots of them many times and in great depth and detail.   All it takes is a search to find them by anybody not too lazy to do so.

I hope you all enjoy your TC’s as much as I always enjoyed mine.   If the rumors are true, some of them are a dying breed, so stock up.

L.

It has been a long time ago now but you gave me the best info i have ever seen on shooting the TC.
I think i thanked you at the time. If not thank you for the wealth of information you gave me on shooting the darn things. Due to a little problem all of my hand guns have been gone for about 6 years now. :(

I want to thank you for the help you have given to me. (I still have the article on Don Bower that you sent me saved on the laptop and need to re-read it now that I think of it.) You have given freely of the years of knowledge you have aquried on TC's and I'm sure we all have benifited from it.

I must say Ladobe, I often looked for your comments on T/C posts. Like you, I had also sold off all my T/C goodies but I got a second wind, so to speak and am collecting again. I'll never find all that I once had but I don't care to. I just want to enjoy them again, one more time in my life. No company will ever offer anything that would top the Contender.

Ladobe,
I too would like to thank you for the countless hours you have spent answering questions and giving freely of your experiences. I am fairly new to the world of T/Cs, starting about ten years ago. I hope to keep shooting and enjoying sending lead downrange for many years to come.

Larry, I hope you will not be a stranger here as I have always enjoyed your posts. You are right, it is the end of an era as the T/C as we knew it no longer exists. Gone are the New England craftsman that would do anything to make us happy, they gave us many happy hours using the products of their talents. I'm thankful for the opportunity to have used the T/Cs for over 40 years myself. Some of my Bullberry barrels are from Freds Las Vegas days, the first one a 20" 17 rem..

Looking forward to many more posts from you.

Thanks for all the kind comments folks.   Its the good folks like you that drive the world of TC's and make them special.   If anybody got anything out of my all to often long winded ramblings to get the point across, then they were time well spent, including for me as well.

I have other interests I've neglected that I want to get back to, mainly because I can still do them to offset the long days and nights.   And I really need to get back into a regular routine of writing ads, taking pictures and getting sold way too much gear and too many collectables for one person to own.   With my limited computer time I'll just need to start retiring somewhat from the TC and some other forums to do those things.   I'm not leaving GBO by any means, it's been my second "home" for many years and I don't see many days without at least a small dose of it.   I just won't be able to give the time to it I have in the past, and especially not the hoards of PM's to ask a question.   But I'll still stop in.   As I said there are many other knowledgeable people, and the GBO achieves to handle anything TC that comes up.

To answer you Bob... I can no longer do "my" kinds of hunting like I did all my life until the health issues and handcaps changed that.   I prefer to hunt alone, spot and stalk or call, and do long range varmint hunting off a portable bench.   I'm just not interested in anything less.   And I'm haven't been a target shooter since the days I competed in several disciplines... archery, shotgun, handgun and rifle.   So I'm not a paper puncher at all.   Targets have only been a tool to do load development or to sight in at PBR for a hunt for me for many years for all of my firearms.   I'm not interested in target shooting anymore, or plinking.   If I could have still "assumed the postions" I probably would have got back into IHMSA and kept some of my TC's and more of my bolt specialty handguns, but I can't do the positions.   So I don't see ever being able to use any of my firearms again "my ways", and they and all their related gear have been wall flowers long enough.

Worked on some ads today... but they sure come slow when you have to take computer breaks every 15 minutes or so.  Past time for another one now.   ;)

WOW
I think I'm the luckey guy who is getting the last TC barrel. I think I'll use it with pride and maybe brag about where it came from. Larry's posts on the forum helped me a great deal in my new passion. Because of him I did a little support thing and now I'm enchanted with this great forum and the folks that post. My years are many and I dream more of the woods then I walk to. The range is my fun place and I can't wait to shoot the TC stuff I'm collecting. Thanks Larry, as you can see there are many around who appriciate your wisdom, me too.
